On “Valve on Linux

I have been enjoying Skyrim and Duex Ex. :)

"

And I'm STILL waiting for Half Life 2, Episode 3!

On “Dissection

Here's hoping this guy's fall is long and painfull.

On “Ben Smith Doesn’t Understand How Insurance Works

First, I'd say that going from not having to pay for health insurance, because it was optional, to having to pay for it, is, in essence, being screwed. That being said, anyone one of those "young invincibles" that wanted Obamacare and didn't think this thing through is getting what they deserved.

This leads to my main point: The widespread lack of understanding about economics, risk, insurance, and other financial-ey things”. There are some damn ignorant folks out there.

On “The Pail King

I'm sort of a foodie too, and I'd never give up my "grocery shopping time". I enjoy going and seeing new products and thinking about what I'll cook the next few days.

Now, I've had cleaning folk come to the house, but mainly have not had them. I found the value proposition to be not worth it. It cost too much for the amount of cleanliness they provided. I also had a problem with them not locking certain interior doors and leaving lights on, so much so that I was close to firing them several times.

So it's worth it for me to spend my time grocery shopping and cleaning my house. I also can tolerate a higher level of filth. :)

On “Is Constitutional Obedience Damaging America?

I realize that. I'm of the opinion that when it all comes crashing down, it won't matter anyway. I just get to tell folks that they were the fools not me. It's not much but it should add to their despair and suffering, somthing they richly deserve.

"

Yes, and for this lack for foresight, they will pay dearly. It's one of the things I look forward to: Pointing to them in their agony and saying "YOU could have prevented this, but you let yourself be distracted by Chicken Wings and Football. Now you get to watch it all go to hell. Enjoy."

"

?The immense difficulty of amending the US Constitution has made it too unwieldy to be useful. There are many issues in which the government has to ignore it to get things done, from the profound (the Emancipation Proclamation) to the mundane (the term lengths of senators for a new state).

Maybe if the populace tarred and feathered members of the gov't caught "ignoring constitution" or member of the gov't did, there would be less of it. The only way you prevent scope creep is to come down hard on it.

On “Eric Cantor’s Plan to Save the GOP

Everytime I read stuff like this I yearn for the comming Great Collapse....

On “Establishment GOP to Tea Party: That Thing You Keep Doing? Stop That.

Barry / LWA

Exactly! This is why I havn't voted Republican in decades and why I never expect I will. It does give me something to talk about when fund raisers call me and ask for money though. I enjoy griefing the callers.

"

I tend to agree that this is "rebranding". Frankly, I don't care either way. Actions speak more than message. I've been burned on message before. If the Repubs give me 5 years of tigher fiscal control, sensible gov't oversight, reign in a few abuses, and maybe score a few heads on a platter, I'd consider voting for them.

Probability of that happening?: <5%.

On “Closing Remarks

Yep, number of acres was indeed a factor in my case. That's what Dad said. God I'd love to have 500 acres of prime quail land.

490 of it could be for the quail.

"

Yep. Sadly. My Dad once called me to ask if I wanted to kick into a group land purchase for deer hunting. Four or five folks would buy the land and pay for it to be planted with desirable crops for deer.

I indicated I'd rather do that for quail, but Dad said that the cost of creating the habitat and maintaining it, much less getting the quail to come would be time and $$ expensive. Many times greater than the "deer route".

I have heard some good news about folks making progress restoring habitat in Texas though.....

"

Growing up my Dad and I would butcher the deer ourselves. That was partially a result of having no one to butcher it for him I'm sure. Now he's much older and takes it to a butcher. This guy will make anything into sausage too, and it's pretty damn good.

Summer sausage from elk or bison
Venison breakfast sausage
ETC
It's all damn good.

I do miss the birds though: quail, chukkar, grouse. Sadly, the quail hunting itsn't what it used to be 50 years ago where he now lives.....

On “Too Steep A Path

Everything is Political.

Politicians have seen the Hispanics as a voting block force now. It's time to use them for their own ends.

Will it end up doing anything? Probably not, the status quo still works for both sides of the isle. Too bad too, because REAL immigration reform would be good. You never see a dialogue about what types of folks america wants to receive. I'd say the folks we want to come to america are well educated folks, rich folks, folks with means and drive to start new companies, to do research, etc., regarless of race.

On “BIBI, Armed Bears edition

I so want to attend that! While at it, maybe we can go out to Texas or Arizona where the Dillion guy (Dillion Reloaders) has his annual "turkey shoot". I hear he's got some high power fun (WW2 anti aircraft quad guns from an aircraft carrier) that gets fired off.

WTB... :)

On “Please, For The Love Of God, Stop

That's why I prefer what was written.

On “BIBI, Armed Bears edition

"#1 – Do you believe the “right to bear arms” should be absolute, e.g. you can get away with whatever you can afford to buy, learn to build, or otherwise acquire? "

Yep.

"#1a – Is there validity to the idea of a proposed weapon being “overkill” for the stated purpose of ownership? For example, should your right to own a handgun or shotgun for home defense mean that you also have the right to own a surface-to-air missile or attach a turret minigun in the bed of your truck and drive through town with it armed and ready? Or to put IEDs in your driveway or around your property line with a control box at the ready to blow up “trespassers”?"

Nope. That's all stuff I want! :)

"#2 – Can there be an honest discussion of legitimate and illegitimate purposes for a weapon? For instance, 2nd amendmenters talk about needing crazy weapons to take up arms against the US government, and I can’t fathom how so many of them haven’t crossed the line into conspiracy. The constitution is pretty clear, Article 3 Section 3, that taking up arms against the government isn’t a legitimate purpose. We have a word for that."

The general understanding of conspiracy usually involves two or more individiuals. Notwithstanding Federal legal intrepertation of conspiracy (sorta like letting the fox define breaking and entering into the hen house), one individual deciding that he'll do X if Y happens does not make a conspiracy.

On “Please, For The Love Of God, Stop

I started realizing what a tool Scalia was when Radly started his "new professionalism" commentary.

Of course, he's a hack, like all the others....

"

Not quite true. I once had a converstion with someone about the supreme court wherein I asked "how many divisions does the supreme court have?"

He didn't understand, but the point is that if no one listens to them, they have no power.

On “BIBI, Armed Bears edition

I think there is a line the US should not cross. I think it's reasonable for OUR self-defense interest to prevent US transfer of nuclear technology to Iran but it's not reasonable for us to fund resistance groups that assassinate Iranian nuclear scientists or covertly insert computer viruses into their centrifuges. We can take the position that "what you discover on your own is all yours but we're not helping you along the way."

This has the benefit of not interfering with Iran's development and not helping them out either. Nothing in the rights of men that says you have the HELP anyone.

On “Beyond Showroom Diversity and Other Thoughts

noticed the past tense.

As a summer employee I had no power. All the regular guys were full time union employees. Besides, I don't buy the excuse that because someone, or an ancestor was, a victim of racism, that means society should tolerate me being a victim of racism.

On “Pork and Pickles

Excellent suggestion. Gonna have to try it!
