On “The Senate Drafts a Joint Resolution Authorizing Military Force in Syria

I just realized that I used to get Senate resolutions from my parents all the time: Here are the keys to the car, drive carefully, no drinking, and be home by mid-night... 1 am, if you call. What could possibly go wrong?

On “On Syria, the War on Terror, and the Loss of Souls

What concerns me, however, is that I begin to suspect that our politicians have evolved to the level of a small stuffed animal, and can see this too.

Isn't another factor that the US is contemplating Cruise Missiles, not Shock and Awe boots on the ground?

Cruise Missiles and Drones? Those are other people's problems.

Just proves that hybrid specs never work; only newbs don't max out the tree. L2P Tebow.

Sure, but what makes this display odd is that it was not sexually attractive. I may cover my eyes with fingers wide-apart to maintain my trad-cred... but this, this was appalling. I couldn't make it past the tongue... not even for pure cultural prurience... and that was just the first 10 seconds. Oddly, I don't really have a cultural critique to offer other than: inept.

If she were Salome, John the Baptist would have been dining with Herod.

On “Comment Promotion: Talking about Inequality

Me? I was just surprised at what he paid his secretary.

I think Greginak put it well up top, and there are sizable chunks of traditionalists and conservatives that are interested in exploring that nexus.

On “The Price Of Citizenship (Updated)

@newdealer That seems consistent to me; I'm just wondering, though, if Elane Photography were indeed a sole proprietorship would everyone just go... "oh, that's ok, they have assumed financial liability for their business." It seems ancillary, and leaves me skeptical.

Doesn't the constitution (or is it the Declaration) protect our assets from a Law School? Unreasonable Teach and Seizures?

"

What about a Sole Proprietorship?

Not being snarky... if the rationale is that conducting a business under the protection of an LLC or Corporation grants protection from liability, then if a business eschews that liability protection, are they then free to conduct their affairs as if they were a person? Would you really make room for this?

New Dealer seems to suggest yes, since the liability veil is pierced, but I suspect not. I think y'all are hiding behind a fig-leaf of "personal belief." Seems that commerce and social intercourse are quite probably inextricable.

On “Theocratic Democracy

Since we are talking about A and B and not Egypt, then I must answer 5.

To answer any other way would be simply to assert dogmatically that Secular Liberal Democracy is the only form of good governance; and that is not a proposition I am willing to support.

I think it perfectly reasonable to conclude that the Muslim Brotherhood might not be a government with which one might collaborate/aid/trade/etc. But, that doesn't mean that the Fraternal Society of Mohammedans wouldn't govern extremely well, even if not in a strictly Secular Liberal way.

I read that and see nothing more than a sort of Rawlsian sigh about the burdens of Secular Liberal Democratic Imperialism.

@mike-schilling Well, we just refer to him as Boy George. I hear its trending.

"

Ugh, hate the new nesting system.

"

@north Alas, only too true... Traditionalists thwarted again by the Neo-Con/Neo-Liberal majority on our 200 year secret agenda of re-unification with the Crown. Before Canada (politely) cancels that too.

"

@glyph To be fair, Canada politely offered.

"

I thought Brown did run in 1992? The fact that he ran in '92 is sort of the entire pro-/con- of the man.

1992 Moonbeam to Clinton's New Democrats; 2013 Governor of California (and still Moonbeam?). Impressive.

On “Sunday!

Oh, well, yes, that's, um, exciting as well.

(Goes back to reading Lasch's Revolt of the Elites... dreams of pony-monkies dashed, but not forgotten, not quite.).

Who can read at a time like this? What, with the promise of monkey-ponies coming from the LAB any day now! Ordinary times indeed.

I think there's a setting (in Disqus, at least) that only lets you up-vote a comment... which seems reasonable. Disqus also lets you see who liked a comment, so that also provides helpful feedback. Sometimes a comment deserves recognition, if not further comment. Not exactly sure what this package lets you do, though.

But, yes, I've never seen anything good come out of the down-voting side of things.

Also... thinking that "select minority" would be a great blogging name.

Hey, the circle thingy cuts me out of the picture... all that shows is the vapid blond guy.

Don't worry, they sell an app for that. No need to leave the hammock.

On “Stupid Tuesday questions, Jaybird edition

Heh, similarly, my father, brother, and myself were in a car with automatic locks. We're trained that the locks "pop" when the car goes into park.

It was a hot summer's day and we all shared a genuine moment of panic - eyes darting from window to sun to kin - when we stopped, put the car into park and nothing happened. Silence. Trapped.

I won't disclose *exactly* how long it took for my brother to reach over and manually unlock his door; I'll only say that it took long enough for me to conceive and discard several life saving MacGyver ideas involving Altoids a tire pressure gauge, and a cell phone recharger. Sadly, starting the car and rolling down the window was not even on the short list.
