On “The Public Pension Problem

Screw you guys, I am going home!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

On “Kip’s Law Sighting: Trash Collection Edition

I'm going to put on my Don Draper hat. "What?"

On “the ballad of RSM

It was all a dream, I used to read Commentary Magazine
Ronald Reagan, Ollie North up in the limousine...

On “Yesterday

I rarely find myself catching 60 minutes these days, and even more rarely find myself watching Andy Rooney, but he had some excellent words on this subject this week.

On “Torture vs. Steroids

I completely missed this; Mark Madsen, of all people? Previously famous for his terrible dancing at the Lakers' last championship parade (hopefully the last one they'll ever have).

On “To Helmet or Not to Helmet?

A helmet has saved my life. Twice.

No fucking joke. Wear a helmet, or face the consequences.

On “Hate Crimes (III)

It's true. Breitbart's mullet really is a crime against humanity.

On “left conservatism revisited

This is some tangent we have here, but there's a solomonic approach to this raw milk problem: simply require that the hazards of consuming said milk be labeled and freely communicated.

On “(Intellectually) Leggy Blond

Love the Flight of the Conchords reference.

On “A pro-Apple commenter said it perfectly…

I hate the Apple marketing schtick.

But on the other hand, we use Apple exclusively at work, for a number of reasons (networking is less time consuming, compatibility with familiar software [GCK, Filemaker Pro], reduced susceptibility to viruses). I use a PC at home (price, superior media center options).

I actually think Apple's main advantage is the operating environment. A lot of their hardware is low-end for the times and their mouse sucks. Sucks hard.

On “The Problem with the Tea Parties

I'm convinced that popular conservatism is about to wear a much different face in the next twenty years than it did in the last twenty.

I could be wrong, however.

On “Of Maus and Men

I saw that Spiegelman talk at Benaroya (that's what it looks like). He was/is awesome.

On “tech bleg

I've found that the Pentium Duo processors are fine for most applications, as the Core 2 duos are significantly more expensive for marginal performance benefits (at best).

I built a cheap mid-end entertainment center from a Shuttle K45 (now discontinued). This required accepting an integrated graphics card and only one PCI port, but the thing is tiny, takes 70 watts to run and I don't play video games.

On “the local school district today

Everybody ought to know, that butter is far more expensive and less efficient

Guns? is better

On “Guest Post: Philip Primeau

No doubt, Cole was off-target there.

But Frum is a snake-oil salesman. In fact, he fits the exact description of the "intellectual apostate" that you mentioned earlier in your piece. Probably a better candidate than Cole, even.

On “Whenever you say “Nobody on our side does that,” you’re wrong.

This is high school cliquery 101. Kaus is jealous that he was left out of the cool kids group.

On “Ward Churchill

The issue isn't in the firing -- it's in the hiring. How does someone who engages in such obviously disingenuous arguments as Churchill does get hired to begin with? The academic profession is supposedly a stringent one, yet clowns like this guy always seem find a place to roost. At least in the case of Churchill's clownshoes idealogical opposite, Alan Dershowitz, we're talking about someone with a modicum of celebrity.

On “my blog post titles demonstrate my ironic detachment and caustic verve

Freddie, I appreciate your candor, and I hate Gawker, too, but little good comes from this.

On “the grad trap

To be fair, graduate students in the sciences get compensated because said compensation delivers a distinct tangible benefit to society. I do not wish to be dismissive of the humanities, but from the government's perspective, you get what you pay for.
