How Europe Lost Its Tech Companies
I thought this was a really good deep dive from Marton Barcza into why Europe lost its footing in the tech world and can’t seem to get it back in a sustainable way as the tech success they’ve had became US subsidiaries.
I think he underestimates the language thing.
Back when I worked for a giant US telecom company, we were considering purchasing Ericsson switching systems. Ericsson’s development efforts were spread across Europe: hardware in Sweden, system software in the UK, application level software in Spain. In order to make that function at all, they had been forced to choose a single internal technical language, which was English. It limited the people they could hire, as English-language fluency was a requirement that took precedence over technical skill.Report
Really solid summary. It was 10 out of 10 until the last minute.
Having pointed out why Europe doesn’t have tech companies, he feels the need to list why Europe is still a great place to live.Report
