Yeah, this might be a good week for all of the Briggs cartoons about the crash.Report
Am I the only one who read through this and thought, “Yeah, the mistress dumped him?”Report
No, though, “the Crash put him out of work” seems more likely. But also – how easy would it be for him to keep being unemployed from her? Eventually the grocery money would run out…Report
The wife’s “Since about the first of July…” put me off of the Crash theory. Manufacturing profits were high through the first half of 1929. There were warning signs, but the market didn’t peak until September. Then the Crash in late October.Report
Could also be just a run-of-the-mill “lost his job or got seriously demoted, doesn’t want to let on to her” and be not crash-related.Report
Yeah, easy to overthink things from 90 years ago.Report
That’s how I read it, not the ‘I’ve lost my job and have been faking it’ read.Report
No, you aren’t. The “calling to tell her he was working late” panel really cemented it for me, coupled with his reaction to her questions.Report
What I’m wondering about is his (aside)s. Hadn’t the thought bubble been invented yet? Does anyone know when? Neither Wikipedia nor Toonopedia had any history on them, though speech balloons go way back.Report
