Horrible reminder that mass shootings don’t end when the media coverage fades away.
A man has died in hospital to become the 23rd victim of the Texas Walmart shooting that happened nine months ago.
Guillermo “Memo” Garcia and his wife Jessica had been fundraising for their daughter’s football team in the El Paso Walmart car park when the shooting happened on 3 August last year.
Del Sol Medical Center chief executive David Shimp said: “After a nearly nine-month fight, our hearts are heavy as we report Guillermo ‘Memo’ Garcia, our last remaining patient being treated from the El Paso shooting, has passed away.”
He added: “His courage, his strength and his story have touched many lives, including those of our caregivers, who tirelessly fought with him and for him every step of the way.
“We are grieving with his family and with our community.”
Mr Garcia’s death is the 23rd as a result of the shooting. He had been shot in the spine, according to the El Paso Times.
Another 24 people were injured, including Mrs Garcia, who suffered leg injuries and remains in a wheelchair.
Although the shooter was never charged with it due to his successful insanity defense on the attempted murder charge, James Brady’s death was declared a homicide in 2014, over 30 years after he was shot. I’m not sure of the details of the reasoning behind that, but presumably the coroner determined that his death was related to the shooting somehow. It may have been indirect, e.g. shooting => paralysis => bedsores => infection, like Christopher Reeve.
If we’re talking only about successful convictions, I’m not sure which case had the longest delay between attack and death.Report
Same with the Texas Tower shooting. One victim lost his kidney function. 35 years later, he quite dialysis and died. It was rule a homicide.Report
