Bleg: Can any liberwhateverians defend internet sales not being subject to state sales taxes? Huge hole in state budgets, and my choice between amazon.com and my local brick-and-mortar often comes down to saving the tax. [Not proud of that, but hey, times are tough and I’m only human.]
I can’t wrap my mind around this exemption, in principle or reality. And me, I’m a conservatwhateverian. Amazon seems to be exploiting a loophole in the law, and Adam Smith hisself would be disgusted that its competitive advantage comes via tax law and not totally by merit and efficiency.
Interstate commerce? If not this, what? and if not now, when?Report
