Saturday Morning Gaming: Cryptmaster
Over the break, there was a game that showed up on a half-dozen “WHY IN THE HECK DID YOU NOT GET THIS GAME?” lists. Even if there wasn’t a whole lot of overlap between these articles, the one game that kept showing up on each and every one was Cryptmaster.
I checked it out and it’s a… wait. It’s a typing game? A word game?
And, seriously, this typing/word game was on most of the “I can’t believe you overlooked this game!” lists and so I checked it out.
And… holy cow. Why in the heck did I not get this game?
The first thing that happens in the game is that a Necromancer asks you how you are and you type a one-word response:
Then the guy tells you that you’re back.
You walk out of your crypt and come to a door with the names of your party. Type them in and learn that you’ve got a fighter, a thief, a bard, and a spellcaster.
You encounter chests and have to play guessing games. There is an item. You can look at it, listen to it, feel it, taste it, smell it, and remember using it and you get clues as to its name.
Here, you can play the guessing game yourself. Six letters.
Want another one? Four letters. Smells like paper.
As you move around the dungeon, you find more chests and you find enemies. You hit them by typing words and the specific word tells which character to engage. “HIT” will tell your fighter to strike. “JAB” will tell your thief to strike. Your bard and spellcaster have unique spells as well and each is a single word.
After you defeat an enemy, it will give you a choice of letters from its name. The letter will then become a clue for your next act for one of the guys in your party. You know that your spellcaster needs to say “-A-” to cast her spell… what is it? BAM? Nope. TAG? Nope. Kill a monster with a P in its name and you might get the next clue: “-AP”.
Run around, play Wordle-kinda games as you explore the dungeon at the behest of the Necromancer who raised you.
Holy cow. You’ve gotta get this game.
So… what are you playing?
