Video Thoughput: Don’t Beam Me Up
In this episode, I take my first look at the classic Star Trek TV series. In particular, would it be possible to beam people through space? And we do an in-depth breakdown the episode “The Galileo Seven”. What does it get right and what does it get wrong?

Kudos on addressing the Consciousness/Soul question.
Fast Ghola Tech is how I’d see it… I supposed you’d then handwave molecular memory reinstatement as part of the reconstruction process.
But still, requires a metaphysical a priori commitment to a certain sort of materialism that Rodenberry certainly had, but which I think requires a ‘leap of faith’ to maintain. McCoy was right.Report
The formula for human consciousness is right here in these 26 chromosome pairs (less the bit that males lack). Massive amounts of storage, a superb pattern-matching engine, complex goal setting across many time scales. Granted we remain largely clueless about how to get from one cell to the whole brain or how neurons do those functions, but all the instructions are there in the chromosomes.Report
