Chris in reply to Saul Degraw on Open Mic for the week of 2/17/2025
Back in the day, I won beer from time to time playing with five clubs that approximate the list here. And at least once, playing with just two, a five iron and a putter. All golfers should play with a limited set of clubs occasionally; it’s the only way to learn to hit unusual shots.
Can’t let this pass with remembering the 1999 British Open. A Frenchman whose name I’m too lazy to look up led by three strokes standing on the 18th tee. He insisted on using a driver, which got him into trouble, then trying to recover for a par or bogey, which got him into even more trouble. He finished with a triple bogey and lost in the playoff the next day. I have always maintained that the correct response from the caddy when the player asked for the driver was to take the driver out of the bag, break it over his knee, and hand the player a five iron.Report
