Smarty cat?Report
Last night, whilst watching an episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle with Maribou, we noticed that one of the “Join Us Next Time” puns for an upcoming episode was “When A Fella Needs A Fiend”.
And part of me wondered if that wasn’t partially due to Briggsy here.Report
There were a handful of phrases that he put in the lexicon, “When a feller needs a friend” is one of them, as is “Someone is always taking the joy out of life” . The former is rarely used, but you sometimes here the latter to this day.
“There’s at least one X in every Y” is another one (which is especially funny because it’s something Clancy and I lean on *a lot* before we knew of any Briggs connection.
Perhaps the biggest one is that he popularized “Oh Man!” as an expression of excitement or exasperation. He didn’t invent the construction of it (“Man” had been used for a very long time, and “oh” was sometimes in front of here and there, but “oh man” together wasn’t super common until it became so in the 20’s, and is still more common in North America than in Britain.)Report
