On “Big Gulps Freed In Big Apple

I don't have any problems with schools getting rid of sugar IF the parents are the ones driving that buss, not the administrators. This is not the case in my example.

On “Big Gulps Freed In Big Apple

I was going to post this in the sub thread between Will and Michael but I think it fits here as well. Notwithstanding Bloomberg’s "unique-ness", the idea that nanny statism isn't spreading is bogus. Recently in my county, we had a PR event with the local commissioner. He brought in a buch of white sand to represent all the sugar the school kids are eating and is / did get a law passed removing a lot of this stuff from the schools and other places.

My governor is also on the band wagon with Bloomberg and NY state's anti gun regs and is working to pass similar legislation. I could go on and on.

On “Can we all agree that this is out of bounds?

I think you miss my point. A firearm, or any other personal defense tool, but primarily a firearm, is the last resort. There weren't called "equalizers" for nothing. A 98 pound female can defend herself quite easily with one.

No responsible owner of a firearm carrying concealed should ever get into a scenario where they are too drunk to give consent through alcohol. My comments about firearms relate to the non "date rape" scenarios.

"

key word "deliberately".

"I do think it is possible for both parties to be past the point of giving consent. At that point, if the interaction is “mutual” (mutual as in both parties are actively pursuing it, not mutual in the sense of giving formal consent), I don’t know that calling it date rape is appropriate. However, if one party is considerably drunker than the other, or one party deliberately facilitated the other in getting drunker than they would have liked, or one party was obviously the aggressor, you start to cross lines."

You said it better than I did. But why do I suspect that even given this situation, the risk to the guy is still high for a charge of date rape?

While Heinlein's book IS science fiction, the subject is 4th generation warefare/revolution to free the Moon from an oppressive Terran gov't. and form a society with much less gov't involvment in people's lives.

It was in that context that I put it forth as a suggestion.

On “Can we all agree that this is out of bounds?

Ah the internets....

Each individual is the person who is primarily responsible for their own safety, and that means that women are the primarily defense against rapists, of any kind, "classic" or "date rape, etc. Everyone else (men, gov't, etc.) play second chair. Men can alter the environment marginally by supporting women, not encouraging certain boorish behaviors, and so forth, but, there will always be men who rape. It's wiser for a woman to not do the following:

Wear very revealing clothing in proximity to lots of men drinking
Being alone late at night in poorly illuminated areas of the city, etc.
Not going to some guy's doom room after you both have been drinking.
etc. etc.

Dangerous scenarios can and should be avoided by having friends, winggirls, etc. around you for safety. Carrying a firearm is a choice as well and a final backup plan in case all the other cautions fail or you didn't practice them, but that's a woman's choice

And I'll take exception to the concept of date rape in the context of alcohol. If she's too drunk to give consent, and isn't responsible for her actions, and he's just as drunk, why is he responsible for his actions? Please....

The vast lands that was "America" is now populated by fragmented groups of varying technological advancement, ranging from "bow and arrow" to high tech, depending upon how much devastation the fall of the American Empire impacted their area. Whoever could, left, leaving for greener pastures as the Middle Kingdom rose to be the sole hyper power after the former USA collapsed from debt and inflation.

While not a "mad max" scenario, the USA fell back to a more regional political structure, with several former states banding together, some joining Mexico (either through annexation or willingly), and others (Texas) going independent. Washington DC is still the "Capital of America" but only to those in the formerly described "DC Metro Reason".

The remaining wealthy have the ability to fly quickly across the continent to the various hubs of wealth remaining, but must maintain high security while traveling between areas they still have influence in because the "have nots" actively attack them. They seek for being impoverished them. The “haves” do not leave their walled fortresses/cites unless necessary.

Welcome to the future…

If I can't live like I want, I'll either rule them and ensure they kill themselves off. Either way, win win.

2) The Prince (as was mentioned above)
3) The Old and New Testament

If the first two don't do the job, maybe the third will.

On “That Icon of American Consumerism

I grew up in an area where the closest mall was two hours away..by highway. Going to the mall was an event, and an all-day affair. Back then it was exciting.

Now? I hate them. I actively avoid them after October to avoid all the xmas shoppers and only go to them when I need to either try something on, return something that I've bought online, or need can't get the product I want online/in the timeframe desired.

Why? Too many people. Too many idiots who don't know how to park and who will block traffic waiting for that one close spot to open up rather than go up another floor and park on the completely empty lot up there, who wander around aimlessly, veering into my path, and who make "shopping" a form of entertainment, not a task to be completed as quickly as possible.

Been a long time since I was out there, but frankly, any state that STILL makes it illegal to pump your own gas is just crazy. Back when i was out there, we (all us wash state residents who went into Oregon) thought the Oregonians were "off". That's probably still the case.

Question though. Wash and Oregon got a lot of Cali residents feeing the high costs in Cali. Wonder if they all stopped in Portland......That might account for some of this....

Not that super up on my military rules, but IIRC, every soldier takes an other to "defend the constitution". Far as I'm concerned, that takes priority over obeying illegal orders, etc. He exposed very clearly a lot of our actions and policies around the world, stuff that is classifed not because it's NEEDED to be classifed, but because it's convenient to be so; having it exposed allowed the public to see what our servants are actually doing. He exposed a glimpse of what real war is like and what we are / did do in Iraq. It was a moral act. The laws of man are irrelevant. It's a net net good. We need more of that.

I DO assign blame to BOB for the sequester. It was his staff's suggestion to resolve the diferences. That being said, the amount of marginal blame I'm giving BOB is not very material.

"

A while ago I started reading about the amounts that were actually going to be cut. When I got some hard numbers, I started yawning, and I work in an industry most likely to be impacted.

I yawned. The cuts aren't material and are cuts in planned increases. Pff. Blaise, you're on point with your comments.

On “When Bad Public Policy Meets Bad PR

This whole "guns in schools" line of thinking is, in my opinion, distracting. I'm really not in favor of more bureaucrats with guns. Gun massacres are generally, rare. Few folks are looking to the causes of these shootings, which I think is most likely due to long term use of prescription drugs in kids.

I'm actually curious as to how this camera phone revolution will pan out. There's lots of folks taking videos, and more comming, I think. It has opportunties to document all kinds of thugish behavior by the authorities....

On “How Do You Solve a Problem Like A Bigot?

This may be slightly off point..

but I really don't care about anyone's personal views, as long as they can get along with folks in society. All that requires is a minimal amount of politeness and courtesy. I may disagree with someone on a particular issue, or many, but even in the intensity of an argument, I'll not attack them personally. I expect the same from everyone else.

If you find my presence objectionable, leave the area. If you own the place, ask me to leave politely. What you think or do in your home is none of my business, I expect the same from you.

Note: I've actually worked with a Neo Nazi. Have any of you guys actually worked/interacted over a long term with an “extremist”? How do I know? He was in a band and played a demo record for some co-worker. Co-worker informed me that the lyrics were, how should we say, pretty much akin to "white power". As long as he's not rocking the boat at work, I frankly didn't care that much. I'm happy to counter demonstrate against him, or vote down anything he might want to propose, but as long as he was polite and courtesy at work, I didn't care what he did at home, frankly, he was the mildest mannered, polite person I've ever seen. That was the only thing that really raised an eyebrow with me.
