"It’s “I don’t find anyone from that race or any possible member of that race attractive,” which is a pretty strong claim and suggests a large amount of knowledge on the speaker’s part."
As a white guy who has dated one Afrian gal (Guana) and trolled numerous dating profiles of African American women, I know what physical attributes get my attention. I find 99%+ of AA and Afrian women not attractive to me. Period. The ones that pass the hurdle are usually have some "mix" of other races, asian, etc. Even Hally Berry doesn't "do it for me" as much as Nathalie Kelley or Maggie Q. Why is this? No idea. It's just the way it is.
"•Conduct wide-scale social research outlining what goods and services people consider essential to a decent life. Get beneath platitudes like “good healthcare” and “decent housing”. What kind of healthcare? What constitutes decent housing?"
That's going to be a gordian knot. Let's start with a small example. Cell phones. Essential or not? Let's assume yes.
Does that mean a current Iphone/smartphone? If not, how old / not current qualifies
Voice only or data / text?
If Data / Text, unlimited or limited data? What limit?
Now do that with Food, Healthcare, Transportation, Housing (including A/C &/or heat) Appliances (Does everyone need a fridge, a coffeemaker, etc.)
A comittee could spend a decade coming up with the answers and then it'll go to congress and get changed again.
That's not to say I'm not in favor of this concept; I just think it can easily decend into the weeds and become a political football, rendering it OBE.
It IS a one party state. The Democrats control the high population dense counties. Those counties are rich from feeding off tax spending from the capital and are full of liberals and progressives. The only counties controlled by Republicans are low pop dense counties on the coast and in the mountains, and even there, they are dependent upon largess from the wealthier counties/state.
I used to live in one of those Republican strongholds. Their percentage in the general assembly is like 15%. Not enough to do much but to be an occasional annoyance to the majority. When I had my assembly woman canvas our area to get re-elected, she first reason she used was the “We have to get rid of those evil Democrats in the Capital taking our freedoms”. When I argued how she was supposed to do that being in the minority party, she switched to “I got money for this road expansion". I countered with "So I should vote for you because when the Democrats passed the largest tax increase in our state's history last year, you made sure this county got a few million dollars out of that tax increase to widen xxx road?" She shut up and walked away.
What’s the difference between a “tax and spend” Democrat and a “tax and spend” Republican? Only where the “spend” is spent. One party. It’s call “tax and spend”.
Maybe your vote counts where you are. Mine doesn't here. It's a one party state. What passes for the opposition agrees with most of the policies of the other party and is geographically limited to low population rural counties within the state, and they cannot make in roads outside of those areas-the machine will not allow it. Given several decades of gerrymandering, they've been isolated nicely by their competitor.
Keep everything. You never know when you might need it, can use it for marketing, can sell it.
Companies aren't going to fight back the feds. They have no interest to do so and every incentive not to. What do you think will happen if Verizon's CEO said they were no longer cooperating? All the legal weight of the gov't would fall into place. AG investigations, FBI investigations, IRS, Congressional hearings investigating ANY law violation. Verizon would fold in a month. If not, they'd be bankrupt in months.
Yep Mike, while I wouldn't say it's the ONLY value, it is the center point. As western societies continue to encroach on the personal liberties of the populace, I think you'll find more and more people wanting to move towards my point of view. They may not want to go all the way to my postion, but anymovement along that axis would be a big improvement over the current state of affairs. Best of all, little action is needed to be taken, the gov't does most of the heavy lifting. Each time a TSA agent fondles a 16 year old girl at the airpot, each time a cop belts a 10 year old kid, each time an FBI agent kills an unarmed person they are questioning, someone wakes up and figures there's gotta be a better way....
Many years ago, I realized that the "game was rigged". The political parties shout loudly about how the other side is evil and they are better side, all the while agreeing with the other side on 95% of all policies. I concluded that the media were either in colusion or participated to increase drama and thereby ratings, ie it's all political theatre. The last several presidential elections have proved that point out well. Now I enjoy arguing points with my political friends just to get them all worked up because they're still caught in the trap of thinking their vote counts and that they are part of the "solution". I follow the news on the interwebs mostly, I get a lot more varied perspectives, both foreign and domestic then consuming the mass media versions but my consumption is modest.
I don't know if it was a B-side or not since I didn't buy music when i was young, and when I did start, CDs were pretty much the norm, but I loved the Cure's Distintigration-all of it, but especially Facination Street, Prayers for Rain, and The same deep waters as you. Frickin' awesome.
You think that day is still to come? It came and went years ago!
However, I'm a firm believer in self correcting systems, although they tend to be messy. The Visigoths will come over the wall. When the time comes you can either 1) get out of the way 2) Defend the ramparts, or 3) join the invaders.
Ah, so "Part what it takes to treat others as free and equal is propose rules that they are willing to accept. You are not." And you are? Your whole point is that if I'm not willing to live by the rules others have "agreed upon" then I should leave.
Actually, people who are free and equal do not force others to live by their rules. If they did, they wouldn't be equal then would they?
Ah, the old "take it or leave it" quasi unamerican shot.
Maybe I prefer to agitate for making the world over how I desire it by convincing a majority of people that it's in their interests to do so? Isn't that what "democracy" is all about?
Actually my version of society is one that respects the role of the individual. I make no presumptions that I know best how others should live their life. I desire the same from others. I especially desire that from my employees (gov't).
I see no reason why I should be compelled, by force, to help pay for the foolishness of other's behavior. Now, often I've choosen to help people in need, but that's a voluntarily action.
I choose this? This is no way the same as buying a house in an HOA. I can avoid that. I can't avoid being a US citizen. I did not willfully agree to live here, I was born here. One could argue that I could leave my state of residence and more to another state, but of course, the federal gov't imposes many laws that carry over to other states, like seat belt laws. The states don't want to give up the federal hwy funds, so they comply. So no, I really can't "leave" unless I give up my US citizenship.
Norms and consensus of values? Really? We've been arguing about abortion, gay rights, civil rights, drug use, immigration. I'd submit to you that that consensus is a thin veneer at best.
I think it's color. There are some tangents of this when G'Kar offers to buy certain human DNA from a future human woman in the show (reasons spoilers) and he mentioned that the Narn are interested in combining human and Narn DNA and essentially offers "we can do it in a lab or the more traditional way". Nothing like serving your race and getting some alien strange at the same time. :)
I have to agree about the subplot vs main plot. I'm much more interested in the internicine petty diplomat squabbles as they show more of a "real" life of diplomants-particularlly ones that have a long warring history.
@ LeeEsq
"Damon, the reason why we can’t just refuse to pay for the hospitalization of people who injure themselves through their own stupidity is that it’s simply immoral and impractical not to."
That's YOUR value judgment, not mine.
"In many cases, it’s kind of hard to determine whether or not somebody is injured through their own stupidity, another person’s stupidity, or some combination of the two."
I think it's easier than you think and just because something is "hard" doesn't make it the wrong thing to do.
"The other issue is that the person might have dependents. So even if you can determine that the person is injured through their own fault, you need to treat them so that their dependents don’t suffer consequences and need more help. Say a father injuries himself through some dumb thing he did to look cool. That father has young children that need to be taken care of. If he goes untreated, he won’ be able to work and the kids will need even more assistance. Treating him allows him to work and prevents the kids from requiring more government aid. Therefore, the practical thing is to pay the hospital bill because its the cheapest option for society as a whole."
Taking care of someone else's kids is not my problem, not should it be my concern. I didn't make them. That's all on him. You make the assumption "society" should provide aide in this case. I don't.
"A lot of people also would want to pay the hospital bill because they would like to believe that they live in a society that would come to their aid if they need it."
Yes, and I want "society" to pay for my Porsche. That don't mean either is right. And if some folks want to help out, there is something called "charity" which folks can give to.
"Letting people do want they want and suffer the consequences of their own actions sounds good in practice but works out horribly in reality. People rarely just bring trouble to themselves, they also bring it to third-parties that did nothing wrong. "
That's what civil suits are for.
"Nobody is an island. This is why we mandate certain courses of action."
There is no "we". Where did I vote on this "course of action"? Oh, I didn't.
