On “Banning pet shops to save the pets

@lukas, Sure. And there's a reason why we don't go to India and kill cows. Culture matters. And the fact that we live in a culture that does not eat dogs, but rather domesticates and befriends them matters.

On “You say austerity, I say prosperity

@Bob, Jobs make more of a difference than all of these things combined. If you don't believe me go talk to someone who is unemployed. If the budget cuts can help get the private sector hiring again, then it will all be worth it. Hence the title of my post.

"

@Ian M., Do dues make up 100% of the wages and benefits of public union workers?

"

@Come Back Zinc!, Oh sure if that's all you'd like to see then I'm sure that's all you'll see.

"

@sidereal, It doesn't have to mean art programs are cut. It could mean more funds taken out of ridiculous teacher and administrator unions and placed directly into education. I'm not talking about ANY and ALL spending here. I'm saying that whenever cuts are proposed the same hue and cry is raised about the poor suffering and 'austerity' and all this nonsense irrespective of the veracity of those claims.

@Jason Kuznicki, I suspect most people feel differently about cows than they do about dogs and I also suspect there's a very good reason for this. Similarly we feel differently about humans than we do pets. None of it is black and white. But we certainly don't eat the cats and dogs we kill.

On “Site issues

@Rufus, Rufus - go ahead and post. Just keep an eye out for weird code in your posts. I'm not even sure at this point if it was our site at all. It may have been another site on the server.

On “The future of the American family

@Bob, Not at all. I think you're spot on.

"

@Bob, Oh for sure. Just teasing.

"

@Bob, Are you implying that I'm a know-nothing??? (I may not know much, but still...!)

"

@Trumwill, Re: your last point, this is what I mean by non-traditional family decisions being a reaction to the very traditional family. Those men have become culturally much less desirable. New dynamics are necessary for men to remain 'marketable' as it were.

On “Charmed Life

@Mike Schilling, I dig Pratchett. Sourcerer was a good one, too.

On “The future of the American family

@Bob, I've been reading a lot of Reihan's Agenda blog, it's true. I'm on a Reihan Salam kick (but I was before he hooked me up, so there you go...)

On “Toward a positive conservatism

@greginak, I think that's very true. It's also very easy to slip into that in this particular medium, which lends itself so well to snark and vitriol, and as you put it - addictive self-righteous rage.

On “Let’s cut defense spending

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and smart criticism! Sorry it took me so long to get here and say that...

On “Does Europe Need US Defense Spending?

@Matthew Schmitz, Not at all, Matt. I have to chew over your piece a while longer (time permitting) to come up with a more in-depth response. And only the French are surrender monkeys.... heh...

On “Site issues, etc.

@Jason Kuznicki, Do y'all really want your gravatars back?

On “Economics 101

@Ed Morrissey, No problem, Ed. Sorry again for the mix-up.

On “The Obama Overton Coup Window and other fairy tales

@Mike Farmer, Sean Penn is an idiot. There are plenty of idiots to go around. These guys are planning a Bush version of this game to appeal to leftie idiots. This one just happens to appeal to crazy right-wingers.

"

@cfpete, Because I'm a blogger, and in between bouts of deep thought and profound insight I enjoy posting things I find amusing, hilarious, stupid, insane, or otherwise interesting to me. And because I can. Why do you read it?

Oh, and P.S. - I've got nothing against these anarcho-libertarian types making this game. I just think it's hysterical that we've come to this point.

On “seniority & nepotism

@Lisa Kramer, I know - I didn't mean to imply that was your argument specifically. I was simply clarifying my own less than clear thoughts on the matter.

On “The Washington Examiner

@Ian M., Ian, I think we should try it! I think we should try lots of things and oppose anyone who A) opposes trying things or B) wants to nationalize education so that only one thing can be tried at a time!
