One possibility of course is putin knows this but is fine with this and will use the strength of enemies to help keep people afraid and keep his lock on power.
Given the rhetoric and mocking sarcasm he's used up to this point I think this is your lede.
There will be anger on the right against Biden for his perceived accidental okaying of this
No idea what you think that means, but He has not okayed anything Russia has done in Ukraine since he got into office.
I expect the Republicans to be on-board with any response Biden makes up to and including US support for the, oh God, rebels. Anything but US soldiers fighting.
well if the follow Mr. Trump's lead, and they generally do, then they will find a way to make this Biden's fault. the Mississippi delegation (which only has one democrat) has called Biden too timid and hesitant, even as we sent tens of billions in arms to Ukraine, ratchet up sanctions and repositioned troops. SO far, the only statements of full throated support come from Democrats.
Biden also announced the deployment of ground and air forces to countries on NATO’s eastern front, including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania — though he reiterated that U.S. troops won’t go into Ukraine to fight Russia.
Speaking in generalities from the White House, Biden said his administration would stunt the Russian military’s ability to finance and grow its force; freeze U.S. assets held by Russian banks, including VTB; target elites and members of Putin’s inner circle; and curtail Russia’s high-tech imports in a way that could damage Moscow’s aerospace industry.
Minutes later, the White House and Treasury Department released fact sheets detailing the moves: cutting off Sberbank from the U.S. financial system; placing full blocking sanctions on VTB and three other Russian financial institutions; imposing new debt and equity restrictions on 13 enterprises and entities; targeting seven Russian elites and their families; and hitting 24 Belarusians for supporting Russia’s invasion.
Notably, the president didn’t announce crushing sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, including conglomerates like Rosneft. He did say the sanctions might not have an immediate effect, but over time could prove punishing for Putin. “Let’s have a conversation in another month or so to see if they’re working,” he said.
The administration is concerned about global energy markets, a person familiar with the situation told POLITICO. Another person familiar said the focus of the sanctions this time around was on financial institutions.
yeah once the body bags pile up and Russian mothers start getting angry that's where the sweet spot will be. But a LOT of Ukrainians may have to die first.
way to gaslight . . . . notice we didn't invade Canada over their internal decisions? And as for the separatists provinces - they are under martial law because Russia has invaded them.
The Courts won't toss the abortion ban, why do you expect them to toss this? Its a sitting governor acting on the advice of his top lawyer in a politically conservative state, which contains politically conservative federal district judges in a very conservative federal appeals district with a 6-3 conservative SCOTUS that loves to defer to states. Clearly you were undercaffeinated when you wrote theat.
Right - both Saul and I were talking about Paxton, who is also up for reelection, and indicted felon (not yet tried) who issued the opinion a day or so before Abbot acted.
B. The United States Constitution protects a fundamental right to procreation.
The United States Supreme Court recognizes that the right to procreate is a fundamental
right under the Fourteenth Amendment. See Skinner v. Oklahoma, 316 U.S. 535, 541 (1942).
Almost a century ago, the Court explained the unique concerns sterilization poses respecting this
fundamental right:
The power to sterilize, if exercised, may have subtle, far reaching
and devastating effects. In evil or reckless hands it can cause races
or types which are inimical to the dominant group to wither and
disappear. There is no redemption for the individual whom the law
touches. Any experiment which the State conducts is to his
irreparable injury. He is forever deprived of a basic liberty.
Id. To the extent the procedures you describe cause permanent damage to reproductive organs and
functions of a child before that child has the legal capacity to consent, they unlawfully violate the
child’s constitutional right to procreate.
I guess if you are going end abortion, claiming a Constitutional right to procreate is par for the course.
I suppose it’s possible to read that and say “See? Masks work!” but I read that and see that there are a lot of circumstances under which masks don’t work and a handful under which they make things worse.
UM no. That's not what they said at all. Which is where your lack of science literacy is tripping you up. They say - as have other studies - that even ill fitting N-95, KN-95 and surgical masks show measurable (significant) reductions in particle emissions, which means that if you have COVID and are masked you spew less contagion into the air. They also say that cloth mask reduce particle emissions as well, but their tendency to shed fibers that particles might be attached to makes it harder to tell how effective they are.
Remember, Jaybird and several other of our commenters don't take written words at face value because they don't write at face value. When scientists do - and especially when scientists do within the constraints of uncertainty as we are trained to do - they default to that being subterfuge.
'Well, we don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia.' I said, 'Really?' And he said, 'Oh, yeah. We’ve got some guys that really, really love golf, and they’re really invested in our programs. We just go there all the time.’"
"In terms of high-end product influx into the US, Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets," Donald Trump Jr. said at a New York real-estate conference that year. "Say, in Dubai, and certainly with our project in SoHo, and anywhere in New York. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia."
