We had a recent outage due to ongoing problems with the latest WordPress update. We were also forced into some theme changes. Some of these changes are temporary and some are probably not. We apologize for the inconvenience.

On “Guns in Three Acts”
M.A. - As someone who not only comments regularly here but also submits guest posts, I am disappointed to see the above comment. Name calling is not only childish, it's against our commenting policy. I'm going to let this comment stand---as evidence if nothing more---and you can consider this a warning. Continue down this path and you will no longer be welcome at The League, either as a commenter or a guest author.
On “On Ross Douthat, More Children, and Less Decadence”
I'll just say this. I like pro-family policies. I am a pro family person. I would love to see policies such as universal healthcare for everyone implemented. That would make raising a family much easier. I would like to see extended maternal and paternal care similar to what many European countries offer. I think that would help incentivize not just having families, but spending time with them. I would like to see the work week shortened so that we could spend more time with our families as well. And I would like to see more money go toward education and less toward violence. These all strike me as very pro family whether or not this world remains, as it always has been, a decadent one beneath the veneer.

It could be called that: Ten Posts A Year
"
Oh totally. I'm absolutely responding this way because I'm offended by honest opinions.
"
This wouldn't work. What about the off-the-cuff style light-hearted posts? What about a simple picture with a quotation, or a video?
"
I disagree. Some material ought to be removed because we don't want it on our site at all. As John illustrated above, there's a cache where the post lives on and can be viewed by those who care to see it. However, I do not think that offensive material should remain even with an explanatory note. Similarly, closing down comments on said post would almost certainly be viewed as clamping down on critics.
"
Why thanks, James, that's very helpful.
"
John - The "taking it seriously" part included taking down the post and writing an apology. If readers want to joke about it in the comments rather than let said comments devolve into a massive shitstorm, I'm fine with that. There's only so much anyone can do in a situation like this, and as is typical in such cases, the vast majority of that takes place behind the scenes.
"
It was about clubbing baby seals using real babies.
On “Grand Old Podcast (Errr, Leaguecast)”
Will, I un-stickied your post cause I'm selfish like that and I want my fund-raising post at the ye olde top of the pile. Feel free to keep bumping this if you'd like to, however.
On “Annual Fund-Raising Drive Time!”
Several thousand dollars.

There are a number of edit plugins out there but none of them are ideal. So far I haven't found anything that I think has pros that outweigh the cons.
On “Dick Morris goes after Chris Christie with egg on his face”
Yeah, times are changin'. The traditional demographic of people who believe what Dick Morris says is shrinking.
"
Yes, well your post led me down my own rabbit hole, and since I was writing today about this subject already...it was inevitable. Dick Morris is low hanging fruit.
On “The Problem With Mitt Romney Is Mitt Romney…And His Message”
Brandon, if you truly think that the left and the right operate in the same fashion, at least in terms of language (which dog-whistling is a part of) then we will have to simply disagree. It's not that the left doesn't have its own parlor tricks, antics, etc. But the way language is used in the big-tent Democratic Party and the lockstep conservative movement is fundamentally different.
"
Well, that's a good point. Then again, if Data had been a politician for years and was going to make potentially disastrous policy decisions, his lack of humanness might become much less quaint.
On “There will be bad blood”
Mike, I'm not sure if you're joking or being sincere. Much is lost in translation when attempting to speak with one another online. You've been a valuable member of this community for a long time, and I hope it stays that way. Just try to think of this as my house. Don't shit in my house, k? Unless you aim for the toilet.
"
Oh I meant to say "Yes please" to that as well. Or perhaps "Yes, damnit, of course!" but that would be rude.
"
The 4-person limit is a good idea, but I think we will also find that with practice our moderators will gain organizational skills, and that with more accessible topics we'll have an easier time keeping pace.
"
Damnit. I will. Sorry.
"
The navigation issue, by the way, ought to be cleared up during redesign. The way the site is set up makes it exceedingly difficult and time-consuming to do what ought to be a simple thing. Hopefully all that will change.
"
Well, to be fair I think that the hands-off approach was simply held from the get-go, from the earliest days of the blog. We wanted to create an organic community and it was pretty easy when we were so much smaller. I've actually long been the one to push for bans and many, many times I've faced a veto of some sort. I'm far more aggressive when it comes to kicking people off the island than some others, but I don't think it falls along ideological lines. I think the resistance to be "coercive" is simply because of the belief that the community itself should be able to hammer things out on its own.
"
As far as I know and if my memory hasn't fled entirely, North is a gay man. Which means the only thing he has in common with women is that he's attracted to gay men.
"
Indeed.
"
This is true.
