On “Providing Opportunities To Form A Misunderstood And Insincere Patriotism

I always understood the genesis of the Pledge of Allegiance to a be a postbellum exercise directed at a disloyal south and then a turn of the century exercise intended for immigrants. The point being the same.

"

"One" was one of the best music videos of the 1980s.

Fun fact that I just learned via Wikipedia that may be only interesting to me:

Dalton Trumbo wrote the novel "Johnny Got His Gun" in 1939 and 30 years later adapted and directed the film himself.

I never saw the biopic starring Bryan Cranston, so perhaps this is common knowledge.

"

It's aspirational ideal. More mission statement than a historical document. Of all the the statements in the pledge, it's the least offensive. Who is against liberty and justice for all?

"

Compelling children - anyone - to mindlessly recite a pledge of allegiance to the state is creepy indoctrination and inherently un-American.

And yet the 'reasons' why the Fargo School Board guy objects to the pledge are ridiculous.

Both things can be true.

On “2023 Best Picture Oscars Projections: The Calm Before The Storm

I'm not sure how last year's Best Picture race was set in stone. While may of the eventual nominees may have been expected, CODA did come out of nowhere to win the Oscar. (I believe you had it a Tier 4 this time last year). Perhaps that worked against the "favorites" as they seemed old hat by the time the final vote occurred.

Handicapping these things would be more interesting if the Academy would reveal the final vote count.

On “Gird Your Loins For The “Great Rebundling”

That's insane. The network/provider battles here rarely get to the point that games are missed. And when they do, it's maybe a week before everyone realizes how much money they are not making.

"

LOL, fair enough.

But as one of the rare Yankees/Jets fan hybrid, I feel my football misery created a more than adequate counterbalance.

"

The Yankee & Entertainment Sports Network (YES) - one of the most expensive add ons in cable, always waring with the NY area providers - sold 21 regular season games to Amazon Prime this season. You throw in games on Apple Plus, ESPN, Fox Sports - it's anyone's guess where the Yankees will be broadcast on a given night.

Mind you this was the network that was built on being the only way to see every game when it was launched 20 years ago.

As a casual viewer who really only "checks in" on regular season game, it's an incredibly frustrating 1st world problem to constantly have to exit Fios, launch Prime and then click on the game, then exit Prime, launch Fios, rinse repeat. And I'm not ashamed to admit that instead of going through those steps, I just check the score on my phone instead of switching services.

Yes, I'm that lazy. It's a lot to ask of a chronic flipper.

On “Senate Passed Inflation Reduction Act After 16 Hour Vote-A-Rama

I view them largely the same. I just have a particular problem with the Open Society strategy and what it is doing to our cities. Something can be both legal and sinister at the same time.

"

You don't have to respect my opinion about George Soros for not knowing or caring about his ethnicity or religion, but it's pretty cowardly to talk past the person you're trying to insult.

"

I don't throw 'evil' around lightly. Certainly not in the 'supporting causes you disagree with is white supremacy' sort of way.

I find Soros' systematic strategy of flushing cash in the pockets of *his* DAs in urban democratic primary races to be pretty sinister. No one sees it coming. They have no idea what they are voting in until they are elected and doing their interpretive and selective prosecution of crime. The effect it is having in our big cities is a proven disaster, and he is its architect.

PS: I also didn't know he was Hungarian. I thought Soros was a greek name. Apologies for any anti-Hungarian dog whistles I may be unknowingly blowing.

"

It's funny. I didn't know Soros was Jewish until yesterday when Dems started this "anti-Semitic dog whistle" messaging..

I just thought he was evil.

On “About Last Night: Primaries in MI, MO, KS, AZ, and WA

Hey, if so-called Progressives don't want to claim Mike Bloomberg, I'm afraid he is a billionaire without a country. I think RINOs would be insulted if he were called a RINO. He was a life long democrat - switched to ride Guiliani's coattails (yes, they did exist) and promptly acted like a Dem as soon as he was in office.

That said, I just find it funny that that the OT lefties habitually rage against "guys like [the current R boogeyman]" as if they are a unique brand of politician that only the "bad guys" produce. It reads ridiculous to anyone non-partisan.

"

Meh? I thought such an authoritarian move would move the needle for the OT lefties. I mean, you know, overturning democratic will to retain power and all.

"

My favorite example is when NYC voters overwhelming voted for Mayoral term limits (2 terms) in 1993 and again 1996. But when Bloomberg wanted a third term he arm-twisted the City Council to extend the term limit another 4 years without issuing a referendum. Of course he won anyway.

And predictably, when he left office the voters overwhelming voted for a 2-term limit in 2010.

It's nice to see the Ministry of Truth and Ministry of Plenty collaborate on regime messages again.

On “What Is The Point of Criminal Justice?

I don't normally read your comments, and this silly response is a prime reason why.

The was the one time Bragg threw the book at someone and goes for an absurdly high bail - and its directed at a law abiding citizen who was defending himself.

So, yes, keep those criminals off the streets and not Mr Alba.

On “Sports and The Power of Assumption

I did not have OT covering MHver3 tweets on my bingo card. This is hilarious.

Agree about the B12 getting aggressive to become 'the best of the rest' conference behind B1G and SEC. Getting raided first may end up being a blessing in disguise for the XII. Regardless of conference affiliation, this is a make or break year for WVU and Neil Brown. Looking forward to seeing JT Daniels behind center.

Per the point of the article, while there are many similarities between sports fans and political partisans, I think there are just as many big differences. The primary one being that the vast majority of fans are usually pretty critical of their team's players, coaches, ownership, etc. Political partisans are generally incapable of seeing their side's shortcomings.

On “What Is The Point of Criminal Justice?

And an important point: The memo that revealed the extent of Bragg's radical agenda was issued when he took office, not when he was running for it. I don't remember any campaign ads with a "if elected I will no longer prosecute many violent crimes" message.

"

"Bragg in March set no bail for and freed an offender with a long rap sheet who was charged with beating a 67-year-old man to death. In the past two months, he has twice released offenders before trial who have gone on to be charged with murder. One was released from jail the day before he struck. In another case, Bragg twice freed a gang member without bail, even though the gang member was charged for a series of stabbings.

The Manhattan district attorney's office initially requested $500,000 bail for Alba, but a judge struck that down as excessive. The Soros prosecutor dropped it again on Thursday to $50,000 following public outcry over the case, but is retaining a charge for murder."

Bragg has proven he is more interested in protecting the rights of criminals than he is victims. The people of Manhattan made a gigantic mistake in electing this fool.

"

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with Rikers Island, but 20 days there is longer than freaking forever.

Your post lacks context. This is the DA that Philip celebrated when he took the job.Bragg sent that infamous memo declaring his intentions to stop prosecuting a variety of serious crimes and despite some backtracking, this case became emblematic of his philosophy. Perhaps these cities will learn to stop electing Soros-backed progressive DAs who end up doing exactly what they say they are going to do. Or, more accurately, NOT do.

On “Joe Biden and the Incumbent Advantage

The smartest thing the DNC did during the home stretch of the 2020 election was lock Joe in his basement. They won't have that luxury 2 years from now.

I never thought he would go for a 2nd term and it's pretty obvious that the powers that be are guiding the Democrats to that inevitability. Mayor Pete didn't take the job he doesn't want in order to wait 8 years. Now you have Newsome starting to stretch his legs with the Florida trolling. We will see more of the contenders clamor for attention over the next year - and then yes - the inevitable LBJ speech. I just hope Joe can read the teleprompter

We are not evolving into a godless society. We are just replacing the old religions with new ones.

On “Joe Biden and the Incumbent Advantage

I believe this is the 2nd piece by the author on the topic in which he does not include the President's obvious cognitive decline in his calculus. Hard to take the argument seriously without an attempt to address the obvious.

On “LinkedIn Posts Are Decadent and Depraved

Yeah, you can forget about ever hearing anything by sending in a resume or an application. Any expectation of receiving something other than a form letter email would be ridiculous. The odds are that a live person won't even see your resume. The algos are running the first phase of many searches.

I was speaking in terms of people who are actually get through the black box and are engaged in an interview process. And in my circles, these are not "we need X amount of Y". People in my field are usually up for one spot and one spot only. And they are ghosted all the time.
