Finally started playing The Walking Dead Season 2. It reminds me of one of the things (among many) that completely ruin my suspension of disbelief in the zombie genre: the unwillingness of the characters to carry multiple weapons. Instead of loading up on steak knives and screwdrivers and rebar and sharpened sticks, they all decide that a single weapon is good enough. What could possibly go wrong?

Complaints aside, I am enjoying the story.

On “Hopefully the end of it.

Going from "Congess doesn't know but is passing the bill anyway" to "the public doesn't know because of the surrounding controversy" only represents a slight change in meaning?

"

@damon One of the best political soundbites ever fabricated. The actual quote is:

"We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what's in it, away from the fog of controversy."

It has proven to be hopelessly optimistic, of course, given how much misinformation persists among the general public.

On “The Third Conversation

If some other term were used instead, it would take on all the baggage.

Such as?

White people talking to other white people. We could likely end most unfair policies unilaterally.

"

I don't know if any data exists, but I would bet that the vast majority of Americans do not believe in, or are completely unfamiliar with, the concept of privilege. It seems to me there is plenty that an individual can do, but it's uncomfortable, difficult, and straining to personal relationships.

"

acting like every “white” person is personally responsible for the situations facing members of minority groups in this country.

This is an unfortunately, yet all too common, interpretation of the dreaded "p-word". It's not that white people today are necessarily responsible for creating those situations, it's that they benefit from them and often perpetuate them, whether intentionally or not.

"

I've seen the "I'm one of you" thing play out on twitter with some frequency.

It starts with (at best) some tone-deaf comment, which the person gets called out on.

It often winds up with: "What? How dare you criticize my comments?! I am an ally!"

On “What Happened To Michael Brown Is Not Much In Dispute

The push for police body cameras can't come quickly enough. Perhaps they could use some of their MRAP maintenance budget.

On “Sunday!

Burn Notice. It started with reruns coming on while the TV was basically background noise. Then I started watching on Netflix and am thoroughly enjoying it. It's a nice mix between a problem of the week that gets resolved neatly by the end, and overarching plot line that gets advanced every episode (at least so far).

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. This games tends to be highly recommended among Wii U enthusiasts, but I'm a bit disappointed. I haven't played a Zelda game since I had an NES, but I guess for some reason I expecting it to be more RPG-y. Still entertaining, but it seems a bit overhyped IMO.

On “No Violence, Just Justice

How can you be sure there was looting? There have been no convictions.

It seems to me like some are rushing to judgement and throwing out accusations before letting the justice system run its course.

Amazon Prime is insidious. When I first got it, I barely ordered enough to justify it.

Now, if I want a new item but don't need it in my hands immediately, I'll go for the 2 day shipping rather than deal with the hassle of brick-and-mortar stores. The amount I purchase through Amazon has increased significantly.

On “Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Barack Obama Bombs Iraq Again

It surely wouldn't be a productive political move, but part of me would get enjoyment in seeing him use his constitutional power to call Congress into session in the middle of the August recess. I wonder, though, what happens if Congress ignores it.

@michael-cain I tend heavily towards depression when I think about what the future may hold in store for my daughter.

On “Do Pro-Lifers Really Believe that Abortion Is Murder?

There's certainly an inconsistancy in the majority (last I heard) of pro-lifers who think abortion is murder, but that it's acceptable murder as long as the woman didn't choose to have sex. As an outside viewer, it would seem the me the goal is to punish (via reduction of options) of women who choose to have sex.

Heroes is the only thing I can think of to come close. They couldn't decide from one week to the next what direction they wanted the show to go in.

"

I had forgotten how far off the rails that show went. It got even worse in the 5th season.

On “In Which I Change My Mind About Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

I thought they specifically exempted Supreme Court nominees from the change.

One day I'll finish my game of DAII. Just fired up DA:O last night. According to Steam, I put 85 hours into the game, but never did the Awakenings expansion, which I since purchased during some Steam sale of years past. Figured I might as well do another run through in preparation for Inquisition.

On “The Messy Convergence of Sh**ty Customer Service and Net Neutrality

Any service you can subscribe to online should be cancelable online. If I didn't need to talk to someone to start giving you money, I shouldn't need to talk to someone to stop giving you money.

On “The Logical Conclusion of “Welfare Reform”

I received second degree burns (blisters) from a metal slide once during a picnic, producing howls of laughter from my wonderfully caring family and obligatory reminders at every get together.

M4 - Perhaps it's just personal bias (I've been clean for two seaons), but I do think football as a whole is due for an eventual fall. There's a growing awareness of the damage the sport does to atheletes. I think society will eventually find subjecting uncompensated high school and college kids to these types injuries unacceptable.

At best, the game will be significantly altered from how it is played today.

Having a Wii that only gets used a couple times a month, I told myself that I wouldn't buy a Wii U just for Mario Kart 8. This week, I bought a Wii U and Mario Kart 8. I was home all week with my daughter, weather and a leg infection limited the outdoor activities.

MK8 is an improvement from its predecessor. The change in graphics is like going from SD to HD all over again. And even the gameplay seems more fun.

We also tried the free trial of Wii Sports Club. There are some small changes and incorporation of the Wii U gamepad into some of the games, but mostly feels like the regular Wii Sports but with better graphics.

On “2013-2014 Term Recap (Save Two)

If the Senate votes to adjourn, but the House refuses, the President has the power to adjourn Congress for as long as he sees fit. This could conceivably be used for recess appointments, correct?

What is the threshold for the Senate voting for a recess? Could the current Senate Democrats do it without Republican support?

EA has made Titanfall free to play for 48 hours. I spent a few moments last night going through the tutorial part. I hadn't realized the game is multiplayer only.
