On “The COVID Origins Debate Heats Back Up

No, just common sense and good a BS detector.

Just because NPR is digging their heels in on this doesn't mean you have to.

Occam's Razor, man.

"

As opposed to the wet market theory that "debunked" the lab leak theory without any actual evidence either? Despite the known fact that gain of function research on covid was being conducted at a facility at the epicenter of the outbreak?

Give me a break.

"

I'm old enough to remember even suggesting the origin was a lab leak was racist, but concluding it came from a "wet market" was not.

Good times.

On “The Percolated Pot: An Instruction Manual For Decent Coffee

I am the last hold out from the Keurig pod machine in these parts...

...But still a heathen since I percolate with my late grandparent's 1970s era Faberware pot (with the long stem spout) to brew my Chock Full o Nuts.

You can taste the 20th century with every sip.

On “The Month in Theaters January 2023

The Jerk is absolutely one of the greatest comedic films of all-time. Doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Our family has quoted dialogue from it for 40 years. (I can't believe it's been that long).

Speaking of which, the 40 Year Old Virgin is easily my favorite Apatow flick. Agree that the extended version is completely unnecessary. They cut the right scenes for the theatrical release. I guess they wanted to put Stormy back because of her newfound semi-relevance.

On “Throughput: AI Sexbot Edition

Eventually the sex bots will be able to fake it better than Meg Ryan.

On “The Primary Problem

Yes, despite being subjected to a voting system called "Jim Crow on Steroids" by everyone from POTUS on down, Georgia turned out the vote like never before.

"

You'll never get the nut jobs out of the House of Representatives. They had nutters in the first congress and they will most certainly have them in the last, whenever that may be.

I'm not sure why they are even brought up in an article about Presidential Primaries.

Rank Choice voting makes a lot of sense but as others have stated, it requires people to trust the voting process, and I'm not sure when or if that happens.

On “Seat George Santos and Send Him Packing

Santos has got to go, and he will. And I imagine when he sells the movie rights to his story he will insist on playing himself.

Acting is clearly something he has experience in.

We're doing the Russia thing again?

Can't help but notice that lying about ethnicity isn't included.

Torres must have received a call from a certain Senator from Massachusetts with suggested edits.

On “POETS Day! It’s Yeats Again!

Well said (you and Willy).

Happy New Year!

On “My Top 25 Films Of 2022: One Critic’s Best Of The Year List

You could say all of those generic positives about almost any year in cinema. And FTR, 8 of the 25 films on this list are sequels/franchise fillers.

I recognize the achievement of Pinocchio, but was it good? I recognize that Banshees was an interesting story idea, but would it really be on anyone's award radar in a quality year for film? I don't watch superhero movies, but just because there were fewer of them, doesn't make everything else better.

As for EEAAO, if you really think it is an absolute triumph, I will give it another shot at watching it. My daughter also adores it. I made it as far as the fight scene where they were trying to jam things up their ass. I find multiverse gimmicks tedious, but perhaps I'm missing something.

"

What a horrendous year for the motion picture industry.

On “A Spoiler-Filled Review of Avatar: The Way of Water

The closest I will ever get to watching Avatar 2 is if/when Mike & Jay from RedLetterMedia take it apart and ridicule it.

On “My Favorite Documentaries Of 2022: One Critic’s Best Of The Year List

The Pepsi Jet docuseries would have been better served as a 90 minute documentary. I had to start fast forwarding through the "hey we're mountain climbing BBFs!" filler. The Avanti angle was genuinely WTF. Conclusion utterly dissatisfying.

The Untold Series was very good. The Crimes & Penalties doc on the mafia financed minor league hockey team was the best of that lot.

On “Munk Debates holds Debate over whether Mainstream Media deserves trust.

I'm not very far in, but Michelle Goldberg seems to be undermining her own position. Perhaps she wasn't the best choice for this debate.

On “Dick Cavett Revisited

There is an account of the incident in which Cavett quips "Are we boring you?" when Rodale went unconscious. He has denied this.

"

On a recent DCS re-run Cavett interviewed Thomas Noguchi aka The Coroner to the Stars. He was the LA County Medical Examiner that "Quincy" was supposedly inspired. Of course, Noguchi being Japanese-American, they cast Jack Klugman for the role.

"

Interesting. Not sure if the DCS checked the box on the FCC's Public Interest Standard obligation. I tend to think it didn't, but maybe?

I saw that Jagger interview this year! Total train wreck, and not in a particularly good way. But I give Cavett props for the attempt.

"

That's a really good insight. Totally agree.

"

LOL. If you write something, and want people to read it, you could do a lot worse than promoting it with a photo of Raquel Welch at the peak of her powers.

Earlier in the Welch-Joplin show I reference (but not in the Huntley clip) Cavett says to her "There you are... and when I say there you are. There's no doubt about it either."

And that is the truth.

"

I was a big fan of Rose. He was a far superior interviewer than Cavett. Funny you mention podcasts. I was going to draw a line to them in the piece but never got there.

"

That's interesting. I find the naivety you see in a lot of these conversations endearing. I don't see that time anymore or less miserable than today, but I didn't live through it as I was only born during it. There has never been a shortage of insufferable people, at least back then they were better read.

I have not seen any Snyder recently. I do remember him, but probably more for Dan Aykroyd's doing him on SNL than his show himself. Anything specific you recommend? Not sure I can do another deep dive into the 70s like I did via Cavett.
