Saturday Morning Gaming: Coming Down the Pike
Dungeon Keeper was one of those Bullfrog games that turned the tables. Instead of being an adventurer that raided a dungeon, you were the guy in charge of the dungeon in the first place. On top of that, it had a mechanism that allowed you to possess any given monster in your dungeon and transformed the game from a top-down management sim to a First-Person fighting game. Seriously amazing stuff that felt years ahead of its time. Well, after Bullfrog got bought out and Peter Molyneux went completely insane, a little company called Brightrock made War for the Overworld and it became, effectively, Dungeon Keeper 3. (They got the voice actors and everything.)
Well, the people who did a bang-up job on making War for the Overworld have announced their next project.
It’s a hospital sim in space.
Okay. Wishlisted.
The second game is one made by the folks who made Battletech. They were pretty much the only people to translate the tabletop game to the computer and do a good job of it. There is no shortage of really good First Person mech games… The Mechwarriors were pretty good but they didn’t really capture the sheer frustration of rolling four dice and none of them getting a six. Harebrained Schemes took the rules and then made the game and, dang it, they did a pretty good job. So when I heard that they were working on a new game, I got interested.
The Lamplighters League seems to be a mix of XCom and Indiana Jones.
Okay. Wishlisted.
So… what are you looking forward to?
Only game I really waiting for is Starfield, which now has a release date.
I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but I started playing World of Warcraft again after an almost decade-long break. The main reason is that my daughter plays, so it’s something we can do together as she is in college in another state. But I’m not enjoying all the clicking involved and my hands are not happy.
Other than that and my usual standbys, there’s not much on my radar – oh, except the Cyberpunk expansion, I will be getting that almost certainly.Report
Wait, Starfield has a release date now? I gotta google that. And start looking for the new xbox. I love Bethseda’s games (even with all of their flaws)
I’m still playing Elden ring–I finished the game and have been farming and coop helping people try to beat bosses. I need to go to the Haligtree, and then I’ll go NG+ to blaze through areas. I’m excited about the DLC for it, but that’s probably a few months out.Report
Here’s the official trailer or the second official teaser, depending on your point of view:

How much of a thing is it now for gamers to just go “I know it’s going to be a mess, I’ll wait…” on big releases like this now?Report
Thanks to the existence of Twitter, it is not a thing at all.
It is better to purchase the game and then tweet about how awful it is. “LOOK! IT’S AN ALIEN DOING A T-POSE!!!! SERIOUSLY I HAVE PUT 200 HOURS INTO THIS GAME AND I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW BUGGY IT IS!!! HOW DID THEY LET IT BE RELEASED IN THIS STATE! Here’s my customized ship. I made the stickers for the wings using the sticker maker mod on Nexus Mods.”Report
Nice–I’m excited for it.Report
I am too. I like these kinds of RPG’s and am looking forward to one that isn’t in a fantasy or post-apocalyptic setting.
I’m cautiously hopeful that Bethesda has learned from Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk and will ship a game that isn’t broken.Report
Lamplighters League does look fun. I’ve wishlisted as well.
I’m not really looking forward to anything game-wise. I’ve settled in for a long, frustrating go at XCOM2’s LWotC mod (Veteran difficulty is plenty hard enough, thankyouverymuch). My most favoritests part of this mod is that YOU CAN TURN THE CHOSEN OFF!!!! It’s a “Second Wave” option called “Chosen on holiday” and I love it. (There’s another one called “Baby Chosen” where they still annoyingly interrupt your game but they’re not nearly as tough).
Anyway, I suffered a squad wipe last night so I’m contemplating a restart, but it’s fun to take on a Long War mod that allows you to dial down the difficulty a bit.Report
