  1. I sympathize with Skinny. I had a nickname bestowed on me in high school. It was used so widely that when I went off to college, I had to re-learn to respond to Mike and Michael when people called out to me.Report

  2. There is a kid on my team that dresses in black… head-to-toe. Like, even with a duster coat when he walks from his car to the building.

    I have not called him “Hey! Undertaker!” when I needed a hand in the lab.

    Partially because of the issue of how it would be wrong for me to say this.
    Partially because I know that there is a possibility that this might stick and he’d be called this in a year (or more) from now.

    But I have it in my back pocket despite myself.Report

  3. I wonder if ‘putting on the Ritz’, popularized in the 1920s, did actually supplant ‘putting on (the) dog’ and that’s why you (or at least I) haven’t heard that expression. (the internet has, though)

    (The internet isn’t clear if ‘putting on the dog’ is at all related to ‘dog and pony show’)Report
