Weekend Plans Post: Recovering from the Holidays
Christmas was a full success. We saw mom on Christmas Eve and did the whole family thing on Christmas Day and oh my gosh I need a vacation.
The nephews asked for Brita filters and pre-workout drink powder and game controllers and, dang it, they got Brita filters and pre-workout drink powder and game controllers.
We ate “smashburger tacos“. The idea is that, instead of a bun, you eat it on a tortilla. Never had them before and now I’m pretty much obsessed with them. They’re pretty easy to make. Simple and elegant. Just put a quarter pound of somewhat fatty ground beef on a tortilla and fry it on a griddle.
Nephew #2 said that he learned the recipe at the fire house where he’s doing ride-alongs as part of his fire science degree.
The kiddo should be yelling about Handy Manny and playing with dump trucks and now he’s doing ride-alongs with the fire department… what the heck happened?
And the joys and stresses of being with people that you’ve known for more than fifty years is stressful but, hey, I hope I get another decade or two of doing this.
This weekend will be spent decompressing from the holiday compressing.
We’ve got a trip to Costco planned, doing laundry, and going for walks to ensure that I get my steps in.
New Year’s Eve is coming up and maybe I’ll stay up? Wander outside and see the fireworks go off from the top of Pikes Peak. Or, since they do fireworks at 9PM as well to celebrate the “Frozen Five” (the guys who did it officially for the first time back in the 1920s), maybe I’ll just watch those and then wander off to bed around 10.
It’s been a good year, a lot of crazy stuff happened, a lot of good stuff happened, a lot of bad stuff happened, and a lot of stuff got put behind us.
2025 is going to be a pretty good year, I’m pretty sure. We’re all gonna make it.
But first we gotta recover from Christmas.
So… what’s on your docket?

The season has been so delightfully hectic that I’m only just getting to this post today!
On Christmas Eve itself I wanted to try my hand at making meatballs (inspired by a handful of recently-watched episodes of Good Eats) so I talked youngest boy into braving the holiday grocery stores on my behalf and…well I made 24 meatballs and they all vanished. And that was meatballs all by themselves–no noodles or sauce or anything like that. Next time I make red sauce I’ll do it with the meatballs instead and we’ll see how it goes. Notable: youngest boy has an egg allergy so I substituted three tablespoons of avocado in place of the egg.
I also learned on Christmas Eve that I was making Christmas dinner, so since I had a newly-restocked freezer and recent experience over Thanksgiving I made a brisket. K made this delightful German warm potato salad and my Mother-in-Law showed up with an excellent bottle of wine, so everything worked out just fine.
My sister is coming to visit Dad and my brother today in Kansas (she should actually be there today) and she asked me if I’d come as well. Normally I’d hop at the chance but I decided instead that I wanted to stay home and enjoy having both boys under the same roof again for a little while. Sis understood.Report
