Weekend Plans Post: Recovery and Honeydews
After going to Iceland, the big thing that I notice is that jet lag works differently than it used to.
Iceland is 7 hours ahead. So coming back means that all I have to do is stay up extra late (like, 11PM, maybe) and then just simply “sleep in” until 6 or so.
That’s how it used to work, anyway.
Now? Well, staying up past 9:30 is an ordeal. My normal bedtime used to be 10 or 10:30 but… well, that’s gone. So I go to bed at 9:30, fall asleep around 9:32, and wake up at 3:30 AM. The kitties can tell that I shifted from being asleep to being awake somehow and they all dart in wanting pets and affection and, well, might as well get up. Might as well pee. Might as well check my email. Heck, since I’m logged in anyway, might as well start working…
Then, by the time the morning scrum rolls around, I’ve been at work for about 5 hours. Huh. Already?
Finish work up, maybe run an errand or two, then get home and address the honeydew list that got out of control while I was away for a week. A bunch of packages arrived and the boxes need recycling, a bunch of food needs cooking, a bunch of laundry needs doing, better move a case of Spindrift to the upstairs Spindrift fridge, clean up this, tidy that, so on and so forth and holy cow, is it 9:30 already?
Man, I’m beat.
And next thing you know, a cat is sitting on your chest with pupils the size of dinner plates asking for ear skritches. At 3:30AM.
Maybe I’ll be able to sleep in this weekend. That’s actually the plan: Kick this jet lag in the butt. Oh, also a gaming night on Saturday.
So… what’s on your docket?

I have been back at work and off of bed rest for about 3 weeks now. I feel like I am finally getting back to some approximation of my normal energy levels, so I can start catching up on stuff that fell by the wayside over the past few months. One of my priorities for this weekend are figuring out how rodents (not sure which type) are getting into the attic and seal up the breaches. I think I found one, but I want to make sure I don’t miss any. I also got some mouse traps to put out, but they will not help if I have squirrels. My other priority is getting Christmas decorations up, though I may go a little lighter this year. There is also a spot on the wall in the bedroom where the cats started tearing the paint off, and that needs to be fixed. There was a crack due to settling, and that got the cats attention, then they want to pay with the stuff that’s peeling off, which just makes it worse. That task might wait until next weekend though.
I don’t have any definite plans beyond that, but hopefully I can get in some fun and relaxation in too.Report
I’m getting off a bit early today, so I plan to do a bit of Christmas shopping and maybe think about what to make for dinner and shop appropriately. Then it’s home to maybe think about the space I need to clear for my new drum kit, which has been tragically sitting in boxes in the garage for going on three days now. I need to get my tiny bit of Christmas decorating done this weekend as well. I’m also about 100 pages away from finishing Joe Abercrombie’s “Shattered Sea” series (not as good as his “First Law” series; not as good as some of his stand-alone novels, but still pretty good) so I should schedule some reading time in there, too. And, of course, gaming Saturday night.Report
what I want is to rest up and recover from the semester, maybe do a little “fun” shopping (I need stocking stuffers for my mom).
what I will be doing: grading and maybe moving some of the glassware I need to move before we lose access to the classroom part of the building
I hate everything and everyone right now and I wish to go live on Mt. Crumpet and steal other people’s ChristmasesReport
27 minutes and 11 seconds until I login to POE2.
Someone rudely scheduled a call at 3, so I’ll have to pause the slaughter of demons and abominations for that, but other than that?
I thought I had a Gala to attend on Saturday, but that turns out to be *next* Saturday, so more POE2.
Strangely Dec 8 is a holy day… which is also a Sunday (YAY!)…which almost universally means the Obligation for both are fulfilled on the same day! but the Pope said Italy couldn’t keep the Holy Day on Sunday, but had to move it to Monday. Which I assure you is not a thing I’ve seen, like ever. And for unfathomable reasons (well, they are pretty obviously fathomable… but no religion), our Diocese is going to adhere to the Pope’s recommendation for Italy. So, Sunday for Sunday and Monday for Sunday too. Lady Marchmaine remindes me this is a good thing; to which I give my intellectual assent; but my passions are a little chuffed at our bishop.Report
POE2: We’re doing some last minute database upgrades to try help handle the overwhelming amount of Exiles getting ready to LOGIN to Path of Exile 2.
…Nooooooooooo
Heh, last time this happened instead of having a queue on the login servers, we broke the login servers trying to login all at once.Report
… as anticipated, we’re now in the ‘cascading failures owing to the changes we just made’ portion of the launch.
What’s weird in this day of spin-up/spin-down architecture *and* the fact that they were anticipating 1M logins on day one… is how did they think making database changes 45min before launch was a good idea? Are they hosting their own hardware? In these days?Report
