Weekend Plans Post: The Aftermath of Catching Up
A whole bunch of little things all caught up at once. The eclipse messed with them all. I ended up squished by all of the stuff I had to do.
For one thing, I had to swap over the flannel sheets for the linen sheets. Well, *THAT* got done. Whew. Having done that, I had to swap out the winter clothing for the summer clothing. Took care of Maribou’s first and then I got to take care of mine. The vacuum seal bag that I was going to use for mine broke over the winter so we needed to get a new pack. That showed up today. So I can finish off that this weekend.
Right before Maribou’s surgery, the “Time To Get An Oil Change” light flickered on in the car. It was close enough to her scheduled visit that she asked if I could put it off until after. Of course I could, I told her.
Then, at work, I got assigned a Demo. I was told to write up a demo for the whole thingamabob that my team is doing and I threw together 15 slides that talked about Buddhism and Operating Systems and they said “you know what? We’ll give the demo to your manager” and then my manager and I spent a month putting together a demo that only talked about Operating Systems. And Wednesday… we gave it. I guess it was well received. Everybody shook hands and congratulated each other.
And so, this weekend… I don’t have a demo to prepare for anymore, there isn’t an eclipse to prepare for, and now I just have to take care of the car, take care of the last little bit of winter to summer clothing swapping, and… I guess restock all of the food/drink that has been neglected since before the whole “operation” thing.
Something as simple as taking just one weekend off can screw you up for half a month, I tell ya.
So, this weekend, will be spent finishing off catching up and, by my lights, we should be done with that somewhere around Saturday night. Leaving Sunday devoted to *NOTHING*. Well, New Vegas, probably.
And won’t that be nice.
So… what’s on your docket?

Nothing too exciting this weekend. Boardgame meetup tomorrow, but nothing pressing to do around the house.
Did you skip out on Wrestlemania this year for the eclipse?Report
Yes. I missed it.
My plan is to watch it while doing laundry. I have been told it’s among the best ever.
Sigh.Report
It’s been an entire month since I’ve been out of town. This might seem like a minor thing to some of you, but the town I live in is small. Grocery options are an unpleasant wal-mart and a small regional chain that is OK but has limited selection. And my town FEELS very small. Like, yeah, when it’s pick up time from school it can take 20 minutes to get across town but the whole place is about 5 miles square.
So I am dying to get out and see some other spot. Want to go to the yarn shop (if they still exist; I suspect their move may doom them, because they’re in a smaller, less affluent area). Want to have an option for better groceries. Maybe want to grab lunch out.
But it’s supposed to be cold and rainy all day long. Womp womp. And the weird thing? In the before-times, this would have not stopped me: “Raining? Well, maybe some of the annoying crowds will stay home” but now, I find I hesitate – where will I be able to park? (my knee is still not fully healed, so I walk slowly, have to be VERY careful on slick surfaces).
And I’ve also found, since 2020, I often find reasons to shoot down plans I had that I never would have shot down before. It’s like that 7 months of staying almost totally home killed the desire I had to experience even mild risk (I thought: “I could drive there in the rain but people drive like maniacs in good times, I could be killed”)
I probably just need to woman up and go; this is the last Saturday I have free for quite a while. And sitting at home not talking to anyone and not seeing anything but the four walls is not good for me.Report
Yeah, I totally get this. I find that I’m much less extroverted now than I used to be, and I’m working to break out of that. We just got used to not going out so I’m doing my best to encourage outings when we have the time. I’d encourage you to get out if the body is willing. The mind will just have to be ok with that! šReport
I find that Iām much less extroverted now than I used to be…
Kept granddaughter #3 on Wednesday while her mom went to the dentist. 26 months, talks continuously, mostly in sentences, ridiculous vocabulary. She’s extroverted enough for both of us.
I’m no longer allowed to put Frozen on the TV when I’m keeping the granddaughters. Granddaughter #1 has the entire score memorized, as well as the lyrics for the songs. Granddaughter #2 does voice-over advice to the characters, “No, it’s a trap!” Granddaughter #3 does interpretive dance. Their mom says they need to learn another Disney movie. I’m leaning towards Tangled.Report
I am fixing to go out to Trader Joe’s for some staples and then Costco for some other staples and a hot pizza for dinner.
I find that the basement, as sweet as it is, tastes even sweeter after checking off a major chore.Report
I kinda wanna see the new Henry Cavill movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare but am getting mixed reviews on the violence.
I’m hoping its Man from U.N.C.L.E levels of violence and not Inglorious Basterds (or worse) levels of violence… I can get Lady Marchmaine to go to the former but not the latter. If anyone goes, let me know.
Also hoping that all of Cavill’s co-stars remain sane and not dabble with cannibalism so we might get a sequel (if the movie is any good). But, I hasten to add, I hope none of his co-stars dabble with cannibalism even if the movie is bad. For the record, and all that.
Other than that… now is the season I have to attack the side fields before the weeds and growth are out of control. The pool, however, should be open (but had to replace the heater — so bye bye $$).Report
Guy Ritchie… hrm. That’s tough.
I mean, nobody is the artist of violence like Tarantino is. He’s more than happy enough to give you some horrifying violence then turn on a dime and give you some absolutely hilarious violence and then make you wait for 10 minutes holding your breath before giving you a crescendo of catharsis that leaves only one or two characters on the screen to give a speech about what we’ve all learned today. And then you want to take a shower.
Guy Ritchie? He’s mostly kinda slapstick, right? Though this is his Inglourious Basterds so maybe he’s going to kick it up a bit.Report
I’m skeptical of the reviews. It’s solidly fresh on RT but even the good ones from the top critics seem kind of half hearted. I also can’t think of a Guy Ritchie movie I’ve found enjoyable since Snatch and even then…. but if you go please report back. Maybe I’ll catch it on streaming in a couple weeks.Report
Heh, I don’t really keep track of directors… but looking at IMDB I liked Sherlock and Man from UNCLE… but a lot of movies I’ve never heard of. I probably would have seen Ruse de Guerre, but it disappeared before it even came out. Never saw Snatch, but it looks good… I’ll have to find it.Report
Guys, guys, guys. You know about the trick where you put a pat of butter on the potato before wrapping it in aluminum and baking it in the oven, right?
Here’s one I just discovered: a small amount of minced garlic on top of the butter and then wrapping it up and then baking the potato.
I have wasted so much time…Report

A song of rebuilding… we *will* reset the channels. Our souls *will* be won.
But dang, that’s like, a song actually.Report
I originally played with it trying to make songs that would get Rick Rubin to say “that’s not bad” and I quickly discovered that all of those songs were crap.
Then Maribou sent me a text telling me about some minor victory she had won by successfully finishing one of the chores that needed doing and I asked the AI to write a song about a woman who accomplished the particular chore. AND HOLY COW, THE AI PUT ITS BACK INTO IT.
So now I give it prompts like “A cheerful barbershop quartet song about a guy who has finished all of his Friday errands and now can enjoy some time to himself with some wine” and it writes stuff like this:
https://suno.com/song/1c9251c0-cf67-401a-ba1d-0096b0c89778
Holy cow.
This thing is *AMAZING* when you ask it for a soundtrack for your day. The songs aren’t, like, good… but they’re personalized.Report
So, having swapped out the flannel for linen, and broken out the summer clothes, how are you dealing with the current weather? Yesterday I woke up to two inches of unexpected snow on the grass, and a high temp off 33 °F. Today was a bit warmer — 35 °F — and the snow melted. Forecast for tonight says another 1-4 inches.
First day of spring again on Monday :^) I’m still planning on getting my hair buzzed down to summer length next week.Report
We always keep out two hoodies and two sets of fuzzy pajamas per person.
We have a throw blanket for the foot of the bed and I happen to operate as an additional heat source for anyone who is in the bed and requires one.Report
