As ever, the forces of illiberalism rely upon those voices of rationalizing, false equivalence, and moral relativism to do their work. These people can be counted on to wave their hands furiously and speak in a Gish Gallup in order to make things seem very confusing and to hide the threat.

But despite their best efforts, the choice is actually very simple- Trump promises to end democracy, Biden promises to uphold it, and their words match their actions.Report

Last time Trump ran as a successful-but-for-Covid, somewhat corrupt, President. Regulation reform, several Supremes, a new Free Trade Agreement that got the buy-in of the anti-free-trade wing, and he managed to not involve us in new wars.

In terms of ethics, I’d call his first impeachment over Ukraine small beer compared to running a personal “charity” which is taking Billions from foreign governments.

The dismantling democracy came after he lost and it’s what he is running on now.

We just have to see how many of those 74 million were paying attention.Report

I love a good Lewis Grizzard quote or three. He’s one of the few modern southern writers to be worth anything.

The challenge for never Trump conservatives – who seem to have a fairly sizable contingent – has always been convincing MAGAs that Trump’s policies (not his rhetoric) would eventually hurt them. Clearly that’s not going to happen.Report

The thing is, the less comfortable you are with the Democrats have full control of government, the more important it is to deal with Trump, either b y purging the Trumpists from the Republican party, or by replacing the Republican party entire.

The Republican party is not a functional opposition party right now – the choice between the Democrats and a decent chance at the end of the Republic (and very possibly World War 3 the way things are going) is no choice at all. This won’t be good for the Democratic party in the long run, democracy need apposition to keep each side honest, and having to be better than MAGA is too low a bar.

That means the only way to effectively challenge the Democratic party is to get rid of Trump and the Trumpists – make it clear they can’t win and the Republican party will either realign or collapse and leave room for a new right wing party to emerge. MAGA delenda est.Report

Trump is a one man show. He’s also Wile E. Coyote who has taken three steps over the cliff. Falling is just a matter of time now.

He’s going to lose the election, badly.

His empire will fall apart. Having to do a fire sale on these sorts of assets would be brutal and nasty even if he weren’t engaging in accounting fraud. He can’t post a bond because he doesn’t have any buildings he hasn’t leveraged to the max.

      He’s going to be imprisoned.

His only hope is to win the election and dismantle the legal system before it destroys him. But he’s running out of time and he can’t win the election.Report
