What about the build quality? I’ve seen videos of molding not well attached and shoddy assembly, far below the quality of more moderate priced ICEs like Honda, etc. A Tesla’s Y is going to run 50K. For that kind of money, I’d expect a lot in terms of fit an finish.Report

By charging the car to 100% each time you actually waste a lot of time. By design the rate of charging slows considerably after 80% so there’s very little point in doing that at a fast charger. It only makes sense when charging at home or overnight.Report

Small nitpick, it’s not “by design”, a design that could be changed. It’s the physics of batteries that reduces the rate of charge as the battery is more charged.

To overcome that effect would require a staged charging system (essentially a series of chargers from small to big that take over as the battery charge exceeds certain level), which would be quite expensive. We use such a system to quickly fill out compressed gas vessels, which are subject to the same diminishing returns effect.

Having said that, the comment is accurate. That last 20% will take a long timeReport

It’s amazing how many people complain in articles like this about the time to charge to 100%. It really should be the first thing the person says at the rental agency – don’t charge to 100% at a fast charger. Not to mention how irritating it is to be sitting waiting at a charger for someone trying to get those last few percent in.Report

Did the same thing and rented a Tesla for a weekend… never found a place to charge it (i.e. the end-points didn’t have EV charging) but never really needed to charge it, so just paid the fine when I returned it.

I thought it drove well, the vehicle ‘awareness’ system was pretty good — but not something I’d trust to drive itself — and the GUI / Touchscreen was noticeably better than all the horrible touch screens that the major carriers have tried (and failed) to build well.

That said, most I’d consider right now would be a PHEV… fine with me to offset gas use, but I’m using gas as a reliable fuel source for business trips and any other trip until EV tech is better and even more ubiquitous.Report
