I was not aware of “beefsteak dinner” as a thing, with sliced beef tenderloin that participants were expected to eat with their fingers, and wore aprons for catching juice and wiping their hands. The Wikipedia article makes it seem very much a NYC thing that eventually spread somewhat into northern NJ and as far as Philadelphia. The section on the tempering influence of women so that “it is unusual for a man to do away with more than six pounds of meat” seems astounding. Not just for the capacity, but the price: today beef tenderloin roasts retail at $18-20 per pound.Report
