I hadn't played Mass Effect. Are the Renegade choices actually appealing, or do you just choose then because that's the path you decide on? I have played a few games that offer each choice, but you often end up missing out on a lot of rewards. That always struck me as backwards, because the temptation for evil often comes because it's easy, and doing the right thing is hard. If the Paragon path is more rewarding, that could really explain why more people would choose it.
"Late in the game, you guys get your hands on Gjallarhorn. Yes, *THE* Gjallarhorn. The horn that signals the beginning of Ragnarök. Back at home base, you discuss the best ways to avoid Ragnarök. One of your party members suggests that the best way to short circuit the prophecy is to blow it but for a bunch of good reasons instead of the whole “we want to actually start Ragnarök” thing."
Does the game explain why destroying the Gjallarhorn is not an option?
I'd like to hear what you think about the first two. Pentiment sounds interesting, and Vampire Survivor was a lot of fun (though I feel like I accomplished everything I wanted with it, and I doubt I will get back to it).
I did a little bit of shopping from the Steam Sale, but I mostly kept it under control. I got MechWarrior 5:Mercenaries and Battletech, though I haven't gotten much time with either yet. My wife and I also got Monster Hunter: Rise, which we had been playing together on the Switch, but we decided to start up again on the Steam Deck (which really puts the Switch to shame).
She also got Pokemon: Violet (not from the sale), but I did not get Scarlet to play alongside her. I have too many games going on, and it's still pretty pricey since it just released.
Our IT guy does community theater. He started not too long before I made the move to Tulsa, and he was going to be doing a murder mystery dinner theater right after we moved in February. My wife and I were interested, but things were too chaotic to make reservations and commit. He knew we were interested, and he has generally kept us abreast of upcoming performances, but we had not been able to make it work out. Last week he let me know they were doing another murder mystery dinner theatre, "Who Killed Jolly Roger," and we realized we could make it work this time, so that is our plan for tomorrow evening.
The less fun plan is to rearrange my wife's home office space. She got a new standing desk, so we will be assembling the desk, moving the old desk, setting up monitors, etc. Not my ideal way to spend a weekend afternoon, but that's married life sometimes (and if that's my biggest complaint, I have things pretty good).
I'll probably try to finish the Dark Souls Board Game campaign I started last week. They released a couple new sets with revised rules and some new systems that largely improved things. I'm playing through The Painted World of Ariamis, but I lost to Crossbreed Priscilla. Like the game, death means you respawn a bonfire and keep going, but I thought that was a good time to pause last weekend. It's still a long game, which works well for playing solo at home (I can just leave it out on the table), but I cannot imagine trying to get it into a gaming group.
I also haven't decided if I want to watch AEW Full Gear this weekend. Between all the CM Punk/Elite drama after the last PPV and HHH taking over, I have switched to Smackdown as my primary wrestling show. Up until the switch, I was watching Dynamite weekly, but I was still watching WWE PPVs (which is easy and free, since I have Peacock). I'm not sure if I will still try to keep up with AEW PPVs or not. I will definitely watch the Thanksgiving Weekend War Games themed Survivor Series though.
My current game is also dependent on a walkthrough. I have been playing Super Robot Wars 30. I would not put this down as a particularly amazing game if you are not interested in the subject matter. It basically combines various giant robots from assorted anime series (and a few originals for the game) into a shared universe. Gundams fight alongside Mazinger and Rune Gods and Ultraman against aliens, kaiju, and other robots. It's basically fan service (of the non-adult variety. It's fun, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.
One thing it does have is secrets. There are certain characters/mechs/upgrades that can only be acquired if you meet certain requirements. Often these requirements are having a certain character shoot down a certain named opponent (which usually makes sense in the context of the anime they come from). The game does not actually give you any clues to when this is required though, and if you miss it, you miss it. Playing requires checking the walkthrough before every mission to make sure there is not something that needs to be done to avoid missing something.
I also got through most of what there is to do in Vampire Survivors. There are a few things to unlock and some scattered challenges, but I am not sure if I will go after those things are not. Definitely a nice, fun, short game to play.
From my understanding (and I have not followed closely), GK is more of a spiritual successor. The actual sequel is "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League." You do not play as Batman. You play as members of Suicide Squad trying to stop the Justice League who are being controlled by Brainiac. It also takes place in Metropolis, not Gotham.
I started playing ER a while back, but I got distracted some time after beating Margit, and I haven't gotten back. I plan to play more, but I don't know when. I use walkthroughs, and I don't feel bad about it.
I'm playing a few different games at the moment, but today I will focus on Vampire Survivors (normally $4.99 on Steam but $3.99 for their Halloween sale). Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Software described is as a Twin Stick shooter that plays with one stick. Between that and the price, I gave it a try.
You start out with your survivor, wandering around with bats coming at you and automatically firing your weapon at regular intervals. Kill a few things, pick up a few crystals, Bam! you level up and get to choose from random upgrade. Maybe you can level your weapon, buy a different weapon, or buy a power up. As time goes own, enemies increase in power. You have to kill quickly enough to level up enough to stay ahead of the enemies. After a little while, you die. Then you get to start again.
As you play, you get coins, which you can use to buy "permanent" upgrades between playthroughs. Permanent is in quotes because you can always refund them and respec.
As you find objects, level up weapons enough, and meet other achievements, you will unlock other weapons, power ups, and characters. Between that and the permanent upgrades, eventually you will stumble on a build that is essentially unctouchable. You will beat the stages boss monster and maybe even last all 30 minutes. For me, I went from getting stuck around level 15-16 and around 10 minutes to suddenly surviving to the end. It was very satisfying.
All in all, it has been an addictive game, and I still have a lot to discover. I easily got my $4.00 of value out of it, and I have been largely neglecting games that I paid a lot more money for.
We finished about half the stuff on the list. Though feeling a lot better than the previous weekend, my wife and I are still not back to 100%. At least we have less to do next weekend.
I was debating getting a PS4 a while back. When I got my original Playstation and my PS2, they had been out for a while. I talked myself out of it, though. I don't really play consoles on the TV much. I can't give a good reason for it, but it just doesn't happen. There are not nearly as many exclusives as there used to be, so I figured it wouldn't be a good value for me.
I am still making my way through Sam & Max Season 2. I am on episode 3, featuring zombies, a vampire, and a goth night club. Episode 1 I got through without too much trouble. Episode 2 needed a couple hints, and I don't think I would have ever stumbled on the solution for one of the puzzles without help. Episode 3 has been less hint-dependent so far. I am glad that www.uhs-hints.com is still around, because it is great when you just want a nudge and don't want everything spoiled.
I don't think so, though I might find out differently when I start trying to do stuff. I still have lingering bronchitis. My first time with this, it took weeks before my lungs felt normal. I will definitely prioritize the task list in case we run out of steam before we finish.
We didn't accomplish much over the last couple weekends due to COVID, so this weekend is catching up. There's some unfinished yard work (I hurt my back last time I mowed, and didn't get everything done), lots of house cleaning, some proper grocery shopping, and finishing up a few things left over from when we did the bedroom floors (patching a small hole in the wall I made when removing a baseboard and putting down color-matched caulk where the baseboards don't cover the floor gap).
Hopefully we'll be able to squeeze in some time to relax and do some things that are enjoyable to, but I don't have anything planned in that regard.
I played the first two Arkham games, but never got around to the last two. I seem to remember complaints about the quality of the third, but my memory is notoriously unreliable.
I've been playing a lot. A few years back, I got a Telltale Humble Bundle, mainly because it had the Sam and Max episodic games. All three seasons. Unfortunately, they would not run on my computer at the time, despite trying various compatibility modes. I got my Steam Deck last week, and I saw that some of the Sam and Max games were marked as compatible (the rest were untested) and I got excited to finally get to play them. I got through Season 2 Episode 1 (I played Season 1 back in a lifetime ago), where you get rid of a demon that's plaguing Santa at the North Pole. It was fun. The episodes are short, and nowhere near as difficult as Hit the Road, but it's still a good time. I look forward to finishing them.
I also started a new game of No Man's Sky. The 4.0 update was released, marking the release on the Switch. There were a lot of QoL updates, and I wanted to see what the new game experience would be like.
I have also been playing Slay the Spire. I have gotten to the Act 3 boss twice, but I have not beaten it yet. I have probably only done 4 or 5 runs though.
I also got the urge to revisit Galactic Civilizations 2. I used to play this one a lot, though I never mastered it like some obsessives who figure out every AI exploit. It is downloaded and installed, but I haven't run it yet. Unfortunately, it is not Deck compatible, so I cannot play it from the couch. It might be my new early morning game.
For my wife, probably 3-4 days. She has fever and chills for a day or 2, sore throat was bad, and her nose was stopped up. The usual fatigue and muddled brain as well.
It was maybe 2-3 days for me. Based on my previous experience, I was expecting every day to be worse than the day before, but thankfully it wasn't. I had a minor sore throat and a little bit of a cough, but my main symptom has been fatigue. If I rested for a little while, I would feel pretty good and overestimate my resources. Then I would get up and do something like reheat leftovers for lunch and feel like I ran a 5K. It's not as bad now, but I'm still tired.
I'm recovering from COVID. My wife got it, probably at work, and I got it from her. Nowhere near as bad as my first case (but my wife got hit hard this time, while her first case was pretty mild). As a result, we do not have much planned for the weekend. Though we have passed the worst of our symptoms, we are still super fatigued, and I have some lingering bronchitis.
I was supposed to go to a board game meetup, but I think that would be irresponsible. We might watch the 2018 Halloween. I want to get through the new trilogy this month. There's some piled up laundry and some house cleaning that we might get to as able, but I'm not expecting a lot.
My wife and I were going to go out to celebrate our anniversary, but she has come down sick. Possibly COVID, but she hasn't taken the test yet. I'm feeling a little questionable, but it could be all in my head. I doubt we are going anywhere.
On the other hand, she got her Steam Deck earlier this week. Mine is supposed to get here tomorrow. I suspect the weekend will involve a lot of laying in bed playing video games. It could also turn into a long weekend, but of the less fun variety.
The great thing about having money (wealth, not income, as we discussed the other day) is you can figure out ways to benefit whichever way things are moving. If you don't have money, you get screwed either way.
I followed the link to the income chart, but I got a 404.
I would be curious about the source of that data and what is meant by income. Is it based on reported income for taxes or something else? When I think of rich, I don't think of "high income," I think of "high wealth." If you have a lot of wealth, it can keep growing, even if your actual reportable income is low. Think of CEOs who don't take a salary. They are still getting richer, even if they don't have a paycheck. Somebody making $200,000 with a lot of debt is not as rich as somebody earning $100,000 with a lot of investments and minimal debt.
I haven't gotten physical Gloomhaven to the table as much as I would like. I doubt that is a unique story. I was excited when I saw digital Gloomhaven free next week.
Last weekend I was trying to get caught up on yard work, since I didn't get any done the previous weekend during our flooring experience. I finished mowing and part of the trimming and edging, when I realized I was out of weedeater string. During all of that, I also hurt my back, so I never got around to finishing. This wasn't the worst experience with back pain I have had, and I am mostly recovered, but I plan to do as little as possible this weekend. We have a few errands to run, but hopefully that is it.
Oh yeah, and my wife and I no longer fit in our wedding rings. Several weeks ago, we went to get replacements. Mine was titanium, so I just had to get a replacement. However, for her, we got a custom ring that reused her existing stones. I got the call yesterday that we can pick up the ring today, so we get to do that tonight.
I have played a good amount of them. I still don't like that aspect. I deal with it, but I find it annoying when I spend several minutes with no interaction with a game, especially when I first load up a game and I have to wait through a mini-movie before I can actually play the game.
In this case (and others) the gameplay is good enough to deal with it.

There are a lot of things that cops do that are unpopular. That does not seem to be much of a deterrent.
Also, wasn't there a move made about this sort of thing in the 80s (with a remake in the 2010s)?
