On “Is this cruel and unusual punishment, or is it simply space-awesome? [Updated]

Well, then, that might be a +1 for making people wear signs... passers by might be concerned that shit throwing is only a misdemeanor and demand tougher laws.

"

Oops... scratch the part about sufficient... I misread; not exactly sure how...but I did.

"

The article says:
"Court records show Aviv pleaded no contest in February to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge...
The judge also ordered Aviv to serve 15 days in jail and to undergo anger management classes and counseling. He also had to submit an apology letter to Prugh."

Similar to Will, I guess I'm more concerned with the words than the sign. Was he convicted of intolerance? Or of not having "sufficient appreciation" of diversity of his South Euclid community? Is no one concerned with the word sufficient? Are all of us not merely appreciative of diversity, but sufficiently appreciative? Those seem to be secondary inferences and may or may not be true.

It would seem that a sign required by the magistrate should only reflect that of which he was convicted:

I was convicted of a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge for
1. Smearing feces on my neighbor's car.
2. Calling my neighbor's adopted children an ethnic slur.
3. Rigging a fan to blow the smell from my neighbor's dryer back on their property.
4. [Whatever else I had done to warrant a misdemeanor disorderly conduct conviction]

Those should be sufficient to demonstrate his odious (and criminal) behavior; and possibly cause him to take stock (so to speak) of his behavior and hopefully remedy that.

Would you be as cool with it if a different judge had noticed that he had seriously transgressed the 8th commandment and required him to wear a sign that said that? It seems to me the sign is a reflection of the judge, not the crime - and that, to me, is problematic.

Whether this is effective punishment, I'm agnostic... it can hardly be worse than our horrible incarceration approach - which, it seems, he also will enjoy.

"The idea that government can and should enforce traditional notions of morality and social hierarchy through its police powers is one of the foundations of social conservative thought."

I think you overstate your position here; I won't defend the schizophrenia of the modern conservative movement (and more specifically the Republican party)... but conservative thought does not this way trend. Patrick Deneen has a relevant post up today on just this theme.

On “Metasongs!

Many of The Smith's('s) songs were musically self-referential. I always enjoyed "Paint a Vulgar Picture" ... Especially in light of their post-break release of their "Best of" album(s).

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
Re-evaluate the songs
Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)

The frenzy when Morrissey dies will be delicious.

I look forward to these articles... and I heartily agree with the counter-intuitive that better ingredients used to the fullest will provide a greater yield. Also, the way in which you buy can influence cost... we provide on the website an ROI calculator to show how buying Grassfed beef and lamb by the side is closer to Costco prices than Wholefoods (and WFM is not even grassfed, in general).

In fact, I'll de-cloak for a moment and offer a free "beyond organic" pastured chicken (Label Rouge Method) and a dozen eggs from our farm to any OTimer that asks... and is willing to drive out to the Shenandoah Valley to pick them up (45 minutes west of Dulles) - we don't ship, sorry @tod-kelly .

If you mention BlaiseP, I'll give you some meat from an old goat. If you mention Kazzy, I'll give you a free "get-out-of-wholefoods-jail" card. Dwyer gets you some Venison, and a Schilling reference, well, I'd say Ham, but that might be insensitive - so maybe cheese instead.

See link above or email us at Nottinghill at embarqmail dot com. [re-cloak]

Good point... though more a commentary on gluttony than social intercourse.

On “The Rule of Doctrine

@stillwater Well, no... if we are talking fundamentals, the fundamental distinction between Catholicism and Reformed sects is the Theology of Grace. And, to tie it back to Kyle's original post, small changes in doctrine in one area will have repercussions on the understanding of doctrine in other areas. Such that Luther's Augustinian ruminations on Grace against the Church's (re-)lapse into crude Pelagianism opened the door to Calvin's sophisticated and relentless logic of un-merited Grace that provides a compelling case for double-predestination.

Within Western Christendom, where you stand on Grace and Man's relationship to it will place you (broadly speaking) in one of those three camps. The logical working out of the implications of these different notions of Grace will impact doctrinal positions on Baptism, the Eucharist and Holy Orders (to name a few things).

And that's about all that can crudely be said in a com box on that topic.

"

@zic I am responding the the notion expressed above that [religious] knowledge "is simply deposited in the minds of a certain class of person." This is a sort of comment that I haven't read since looking over some good 17th/18th century anti-popery tracts.

The vignette you paint is rather the point; those people (from what you write) seem to exhibit a real interest and Christian imagination that informs their lives since they seem to take special care to make special allowance for the images... or is it your contention that they do this because the notion was deposited into the mind of someone else? You may think it folly, but I at least know it to be genuine.

"

This is not epistemologically correct; when Catholics say Christianity is a revealed religion, we mean it is revealed to all humanity for careful study and observation, not that it is revealed to a select few in each generation - that would be a form of gnosticism.

I suppose that this only makes it look more confusing rather than less, but none of us harbor any particular notion that the hierarchy has a better understanding of revelation by virtue of their episcopal order; even if we do believe that they have a duty to defend and teach it. Indeed almost half the "Doctors of the Church" were not in the hierarchy.

I think that Groucho's point (more than rehashing the beauty of the countryside) is, "Farmas Gon' Farm."

"

"How can you expect them to stay on the farm once they have seen Paris?"

I think Douthat's point (more than rehashing assortive mating) is that we who know Paris live as though we are on the Farm.

"

It appears that Mr. Douthat has already penned a response to your queries.

On “Populism In a Nutshell, Again

I guess I'm confused that your primary target is populism.

What exactly do we mean by populism? Is it just anti-Professionalism (anti-Establishment)? Are there no examples of Professionals that have fallen prey to the do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do rule?

"Follow me around. I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They'll be very bored." G. Hart (1987).

Hucksters, liars, cheats... moths to the flame of Power, to be sure. That's hardly a heel unique to Achilles. But Populism? Feels like a target you wanted to have and let loose your dart.
