On “Manufacturing right-wing bias

@Simon K, Last election, I voted Paul in the primaries and Barr in the general. Locally, I usually vote the Dem. I like the liberal society in the NW and want to conserve and preserve it. I wish local Republicans would return to NW conservatism epitomised by Tom Mccall but usually their on board with the national/southern ilk which isn't right for our area.

On “Just in time for Father’s Day

@Trumwill, I was talked into having kids. Now, I'm a homeschooling dad that couldn't be happier. My daughter is easily the best thing that's happened to me.

On “Manufacturing right-wing bias

@Simon K, Count me in. I identify as a conservative, albeit a Cascadian conservative. I have no more time for socons than Hitch.

On “Just in time for Father’s Day

The mommy wars are starting to include dads. I suppose it had to happen.

On “Against Progress

I found the piece interesting. We must have gone beyond this model. It seems today that people put long grueling hours into hobbies or jobs that interest them that are quite separate from pay or pressure. This blog would be a great example.

On “Greetings from a Loyal Democrat

Welcome. It will be nice to have another voice here... even with the disparaging remarks toward St. Oscar.

On “Remembering The Pill

@Matthew Schmitz, With the history of hostility around these matters, I see know reason why turn around isn't fair play. Of course, there are better answers than nasty hostility:

"

@Matthew Schmitz, I fail to see how having something easy and reliable constitutes the lack of choice. If these lads want to take the Benedict option and join the Amish, godspeed.

On “More government jobs to weather the recession?

@Mike Schilling, Not really. Just because you pay taxes doesn't mean that you are paying your full share. The rich pay for employed and unemployed alike. Unless you're in the upper reaches of the tax bracket, you're getting more in benefits than you're actually paying for.

On “(Non?)Violent Civil Disobedience

@Bob Cheeks, Bob, I don't really know or understand this area, but, correct me if I'm wrong, one war doesn't seem to be the end of the matter. Aren't these conflicts as old Abraham? What does history show us is the end of the conflict? If we don't care for apocalyptic fantasies, why would we want to get involved in the area at all? Wouldn't containment and a hands off approach be the appropriate secular response?

On “The top ten least bohemian cities

@trumwill, I suppose it depends if you mean semi-hip college towns with a bit of hippie chic or White Castle, Bohemian Rhapsody stuff, via Wayne's World. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YDwj-BRKwc

"

I'm not sure what "Bohemian" entails in this day and age. At a guess, it's going to require young'ns so universities might help.

Having a place to congregate would probably be necessary too, so a central core and careful watch on the big boxes and fast food chains would help.

Neighborhoods make a city interesting. Mixed zoning for retail and residential allow for this.

And of course, needle exchanges as Jay points out. Can't be having an oppressive police presence, it ruins the buzz.

On “(Non?)Violent Civil Disobedience

@Bob Cheeks, People of the Book? I come from the godless coast where pseudo Americans dwell. Let the Bible Belt fund them if they want. Besides, as you point out, it's not as if the Israelis can't fund and arm themselves.

"

@Bob Cheeks, I'm all for small government, except when......

On “Progressives should take a second look at competitive federalism

@Kyle, Not really sure I understand. I'm not a liberal in the current usage. I don't bemoan concentrations of wealth. Otherwise not solve the problem by a 99% tax and spread the money around the globe. I like wealth. I like the sorts of things it buys, like education, beer, housing (not necessarily in that order).

I think Red States should be allowed to spend their money on whatever they wish, roads, libraries or what have you. I would like the same freedom to spend our money on our roads, our libraries, our social institutions.

The money from those military contracts come from some place. I'd just as soon have a greater say in where it goes. Iraq and Afghanistan seem like poor choices.

On “Banning Burqas: Yea or Nay?

Wear whatever you want in the privacy of your own home.

On “Was Jesus a Canadian?

@Scott, It seems we're all too eager to tell others how to run their countries. Turn around seems fair play. So, where do you live that gives you authority on AZ?

On “Progressives should take a second look at competitive federalism

@Kyle,When it comes to wealth, we're not talking about whether you get the new Beemer or not. It's libraries, social services, infrastructure. It's hard closing down music programs for the young so the money can be channelled toward a transport plane the military doesn't even want.

Leading through legislation, as has been pointed out, has limited value. It would be much better for the progressive States to lead by example, let the retrograde States show who they really are.

Return to State militias. It would give more ownership to service encouraging more than the desperate or jingoistic to serve. It would also be a check on military adventurism, and the ensuing blowback, and save our military might for when we are actually threatened.

On “Gary Johnson 2012

@Koz, I'm not sure how much value "hope" has these days. It will take a lot to convince me that your coalition offers anything toward prosperity or meaningful limited government. When Ron Paul gets a position of power within the establishment let me know and I'll start taking you seriously. With the current list of players, that's impossible.

On “Desire and Deviance, again

@North, If you read above, I favor the Kinsey understanding. There's nothing wrong with saying for some it's not a choice and for others it is. There's nothing wrong with it. For some, it can be a wonderful choice. Jay likes quoting Vonegut's "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be" He claims it's one of three things he knows, along with "when you're dead, you're dead", and my favorite, "Make love when you can, It's good for you."

On “Gary Johnson 2012

@Jason Kuznicki, I'd be willing to accept a lot of immediate social costs for heroin if it meant depriving the international cartels resources. I'd rather see poppies grown in California and deal with the fall out, than see them grown in Afghanistan and have to deal with the unintended costs.

"

@Jaybird, good question. Cascadian paleo? How would you classify E.D's post? I'm an anti-fedarilist so we can be Norway without having to negotiate with the knuckle draggers.

"

@Jaybird, paleo I get but how do I qualify as a libertarian? Libertine, sure. With just a bit more Balkanization we'd all be supporting our own. I don't think I've ever supported national safety nets... unless by nation we're talking about Cascadia.
