I dived the Cayman wall to see Crinoids at @ 300 feet or more in a research sub a long time ago. The "old white guy" who was the driver (and only crewmember), gave my wife and I a safety briefing, instructed us on how to do an emergency accent, and how to use the radio to call for help once we surfaced, if, “I have a heart attack and become incapacitated.” Wife looked at me as if "is this ***t real? Yes, yes it was. This ain't no Atlantis sub that is positively buoyant. I don't need inspiration on dive to the Titanic. I don't want to see a 30 year old person, of any flavor, at the helm. I want some guy who’s spent half his life underwater and knows his stuff. If that’s a 50 year old white guy, former navy submariner, so be it. It’s about safety and getting back alive.

Exactly, as far as I know, the over reach was never address. No one came out and said "we were wrong on this, this, and this, but got this right." They never will.

"Black Holes might not exist after all, new study shows"

https://anomalien.com/black-holes-might-not-exist-after-all-new-study-shows/

"Before a black hole can form, the dying star swells one last time and then explodes. A singularity never forms and neither does an event horizon. The take home message of her work is clear: there is no such thing as a black hole."

On “Hunter Biden Takes Plea Deal On Tax, Gun Charges

Business have tax experts that can go right to the edge of the line of legal/illegal. Don't think politicians don't do that? The smarter ones do. The ones that are successful do. Shady? Maybe, Legal, yes.

On “Republicans Tout Biden Recordings, But Do They Exist?

Of course Biden is corrupt. He's a politician, and was one of significant power before he became president. The question is he involved in this particular situation. Time will tell.

On “How Far Is Too Far In Supporting Ukraine?

Ah, so the measure of international meddling is solely measured by how many of the meddler's countrymen die.....got it.

"

Just because we pay mercenaries to be our "boots on the ground" doesn't mean we're not neck deep in it in other ways.

Yep, and our involvement has never ever had any negative conspectuses 20 years down the road...

"

Give me a reason why I should give a damn about Ukraine.

It's in Russia's sphere of influence. I see no reason to get significantly involved. We already replaced their gov't. We do stuff like this in our sphere of influence.

"At the very least a bigger yard and more square footage doesn’t remotely tempt me" Agree on that. I had no desire to mow grass (even a 1/4 acre) after the divorce. Now I life in similar square footage and a small patio. It's enough, especially given the location. But my house is 50% less then single family houses or more here even if I'd want that.

"

"I would happily live somewhere even denser if it was remotely affordable" I would not. I live in a very similar situation as you do. I can walk to the mall, movies, and a concert hall. I'm 30 mins from the airport and 20 from trains. It's very expensive here as 1) it's an expensive state, 2) in an area lots of folks want to live. Most folks I know who live here could not afford to buy any form of property now if they had to. The only reason they can live here is they bought 10-20 years ago. I can't wait to leave here and move to my retirement location.

"The US Is Preparing Evacuation Plans for American Citizens in Taiwan"

I'd kinda think that plans would have already been put in place anywhere there are significant US nationals, but could be wrong.

Fortunately, this is what I think most people these days think of with the phrase “Crossing the Rubicon.”

Folk have lost their understanding of history.

"And in my organization, when we have unobligated funds – as organizational policy we forward fund our contractors and our university research partners rather then buy “toys.” We’d rather keep the brain power intact."

That's an excellent example of what you SHOULD be doing. Kudos.

"

It's not the profit motive, it's the fundamental nature of bureaucracy. An organization's goals are not necessary the same as the entire agency, or company, or stockholders, and sometimes are in direct conflict. A reasonable example: You're under budget and approaching the end of the financial year. It you don't spend your budget, you get less next year, so you go and buy stuff you didn't really need. Yep, a trope, but I've seen it happen, and it happens a lot.

"

I believe that they do take it seriously, at least when they swear or sign to that effect. Whether they do so during their every day job duties is another issue.

My experience in the gov't contracting world indicates that people often don't do what they are supposed to do: They are carless with classified documents, they send emails in which they admit to knowingly breaking company/gov't policy, they follow direct instructions from superiors to violate company/gov't policy, and they knowingly do not speak up when they become aware of others violating company/gov't policy, in violation of gov't/company policy.....

Humans gonna human. Compliance is a constant struggle. Gov't workers aren't any different than corporate in that regard.

"

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God."

Pledging something and actually doing what you pledge are two different things....

They aren't "working" in the sense of herding goats 24/7, they just have to be AVAILABLE 24/7 in case they do need to herd goats outside of 9-5

"

I did. Due to "new state labor regulations are making it more expensive to provide goat-grazing services, and herding companies say the rules threaten to put them out of business. The changes could raise the monthly salary of herders from about $3,730 to $14,000, according to the California Farm Bureau."

"Companies have historically been allowed to pay goat and sheepherders a monthly minimum salary rather than an hourly minimum wage, because their jobs require them to be on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But legislation signed in 2016 also entitles them to overtime pay. It effectively boosted the herders’ minimum monthly pay from $1,955 in 2019 to $3,730 this year. It’s set to hit $4,381 in 2025, according to the California Department of Industrial Relations."

Seems one hand of the cali gov't is working hard to defeat the purpose of another cali state agency.

"

I love cali....

No kidding: California overtime law threatens use of grazing goats to prevent wildfires.

IIRC at least one insurance company, after a hurricane in the SE, told homeowners who had EVs in their garages, which had flooded, to push the car out of the garage so if the battery went critical, only the car would be a loss, not the house too. And at least one insurer ceased covering EVs.
