On “From NPR: The Senate approves a bill to make daylight saving time permanent

Pedantic question: Will permanent Daylight Time to be renamed the new Standard Time?

A decades long pet peeve of mine is how many people keep using EST/PST when it should be EDT/PDT most of the year.

On “Tucker Carlson, Russia, and Hanlon’s Razor

Yeah, I've seen all of that. And I went back and watched full clips to understand the context of those supercuts. I don't think he is cheerleading Russia - and certainly not now in light of the full extent of the invasion (which is far more expansive and barbarous than anyone anticipated).

As for Zelenskyy, He's a real time profile in courage and inspirational leadership. I respect the hell out of him and the Ukrainian people. And while nothing justifies what Putin has unleashed, I can also acknowledge the shenanigans the US has conducted that played a role in this tragedy.

Wanting to know the full extent of those things and/or wanting people to pump the breaks on actions that will escalate our involvement does not make a person a stooge for Putin.

"

Re: Tucker: If you can provide evidence of his "cheerleading for Putin's invasion" I'd love to see it. Pointing out corruption in Ukraine and the US role is setting up the current government there - is not what I consider an endorsement of Putin's invasion. I think he can certainly be justly accused of apathy, but most of this recent criticism is completely over the top.

Re Tulsi: If you want to take the State Department's word on everything as Gospel, that's your choice. I've lived through enough of their lying to remain highly skeptical of anything they say.

I'm getting a strong "you're either with us, or with the terrorists" vibe these days, and I don't like it.

"

"Malice is the only word for what Tucker Carlson is doing. And it has entered the realm of blatant evil"

Are we doing the "evil" thing again to try an explain/understand people and events?

The most chilling thing I've seen in this country since the invasion of Ukraine is how hawks and political adversaries are getting away with (if not cheered) for calling anyone who questions the U.S. role in all of this "treasonous."

Tucker isn't evil. He's an American first protectionist and a provocateur.
Tulsi isn't committing treason, she is asking legitimate questions about the labs in Ukraine.. AND she is ACTUALLY serving in the US military RIGHT NOW !
Greenwald has been exposing the horrible things our government has committed over the past 20 years and his voice is an important one as the drum beat for war in Washington grows louder.

Given our government's track record with the truth, I want more people questioning what we are doing - not fewer.

On “Recess – and “Crack the Whip”

If played correctly, someone was getting injured.

Of course, our school yard surface was entirely asphalt, so...

On “On Letting The Poors Eat Cake and Drive Electric Vehicles

I saw this movie before. Last week when the partisans circled the wagons to deny Defund the Police & BLM. Even when you point out members of congress and specific municipalities, it morphs into "not representative".

"

This seems like a no-brainer to accept, if accurate.

Putin saves face, Ukraine survives, the killing and destruction stop.

Let Russia enjoy their Pyrrhic victory.

Putin is 70 years old and will not be in power forever. Ukraine can be properly armed in the interim while waiting for the despot's ouster.

On “War and the Speed of History

I didn't say we didn't care. We do. Very much.

But not enough to start a World War over.

I don't disagree with the lines the West has drawn. My point is that the ethical dilemma (let some die to prevent more from dying) makes me ill.

"

Oh, I don't deny them their agency. It's what is enabling the irony.

I meant pawns in terms of how the West is playing the chess game out. Ukraine's well being is immaterial to the service they are providing the rest of the pieces of the European chess board.

"

You touch on the point about that makes me sick to my stomach.

The West is helping Ukraine enough to keep them on life support, but not enough to actually cure them. The Ukrainians are literally pawns in this global chess match.

The more damage they do, the longer they do it, the better for us.

Not so much them.

How nice of us to help them sacrifice themselves for Europe's benefit. This is a tragedy in slow motion.

"

I just learned that distinction recently. (Keeeeeve, one syllable).

I still say San Diego Chargers, so there will be an adjustment period.

"

We (the West and our media) are firmly (and justly) on the Ukrainian side of the conflict and eager to interpret news as "positive" because we very much don't like the alternative. It's human nature to do so.

Confirmation bias is always prevalent and often moreso in the fog of war. We'll continue to see this tone of reporting until Kiev falls and reality slaps us sober.

"

I hope you're right, but I think an oligarch revolt is a pipe dream.

As long as Putin has China's support, international sanctions will not deter him.

"

It's hard not to be inspired by the valor and resiliency of the Ukrainians. But the reports of the Russian "failures" in this invasion is wishful thinking thinking at best, and straight up propaganda at worst.

I fear the calculus has changed even more with Putin demonstrating he is willing to attack the largest nuclear plant in Europe. He's already on to the next conflict sending that message to the EU and the US.

I see no off ramp at this point.

On “President Biden Wants To Use State of the Union To Change The Subject

More than 20 U.S. cities defunded their police departments. I assure they were not Republican jurisdictions.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/07/us-cities-defund-police-transferring-money-community

It's weird that Dems have adopted this denial tactic when confronted with their own failed and/or unpopular policies.

CRT is not being taught in schools.
The southern border is not a crisis.
Russian sanctions were not intended to be a deterrent.
We never supported Defund the Police.

Nobody but the true believers buy it.

"

It's funny. Supporting BLM isn't akin to supporting Defund The Police yet it's clearly stated in their demands. Read #5 for yourself.

https://blacklivesmatter.com/blm-demands/

Why don't the Dems don't hold themselves to the same rules of affinity that they hold lunatic Republicans?

"

It was the first article of many you will find on a simple google search. You're free to memory hole the summer of 2020, but no one but partisans are going to buy the spin.

"

Are you asking about DTP supporters TODAY?

Yeah, that list is now small because it's a suicidal political position heading into the midterms.

Two years ago. it was common. To insist otherwise is gaslighting.

On “SNL: Covid Dinner Conversation

For current SNL it was pretty funny.

And compared to a Clare Briggs cartoon, it was Richard Pryor on the Sunset Strip

"

If either were knowable, I'd make a gentleman's wager with you that far fewer people died from that (and I'd throw in injecting bleach and fish tank chemicals) than died from thinking their CVS mask was a magical forcefield against covid.

"

I wonder how many people died because they thought cloth masks would protect them from breathing in covid aerosol particles.

On “Hello, Cold War II!

Living in NYC we assumed we'd be vaporized. I vividly remember the CCCP shooting down the Korean Air passenger jet and my parents not letting me watch The Day After, which aired soon after.

Scary times to be a kid.

I prefer my Cold War nostalgia limited to watching Charlize Theron kick East German ass in Atomic Blonde.

On “The Terrible Ukraine Situation, With No Good Solution

I imagine part of Putin's calculus is that he will have what he wants before the sanctions begin to really hurt.

I also have to believe he has arrangements with China designed to offset the longer term ramifications.

"

Deploying US troops to NATO countries isn't supporting Ukraine. It's the right move, and necessary for when Ukraine is conquered, but has no bearing on the crisis at hand.

As I said, all of the sanctions should have been executed as soon as the invasion started. At least whatever we could issue unilaterally. The time to keep dry powder on sanctions is over.

I hope whatever addition arms we can get Ukraine inflict pain on the invaders, but there aren't enough STA to offset Russia's air superiority, and frankly, it will likely inflict just as much additional carnage to innocent Ukrainians by dragging out the inevitable.

Short of conventional US military intervention (which I do not advocate), I think we should be hurting them w cyber. I know people fear retaliation, but I think people underestimate our capabilities. Putin is assuming we wouldn't dare. He's prepared for max sanctions. But is he prepared to deal w cyber attacks on mother Russia?
