On “Thomas Aquinas Meets The Flying Spaghetti Monster

they haven’t changed much in 300 years

Lies, Chris.
Sir Richard's foundation is the biological basis of behavior.
The selfish genes code for only three things: reproduction, survival, and death. We know more about the biological basis for religion every day.

On “Casino Politics

Again, you would be wrong.
The correlation between increasing secularism and size of the welfare state is evident in more nation states than just England. Look at Scandinavia, and Europe in general. The more State aid people recieve, the less they need the charity of local churches.
The time that religious adherence is formed is between the ages of 7 and 13. But for the higher IQ adolescents, the adherence is often broken in college......when the door to better paying professions is opened.

"

Why has Britain gone secular then?
I'll dig up the Economist study about differences in religious belief between brits and 'mericans.
Considering our shared cultural heritage the differences in say.... godbelief and creationism are pretty shocking.
I predict the Large Government (including nat'l healthcare) Obama proposes will cause a sharp rate of increase in the secularization of 'Merican culture.

On “atheism and monsters

Or closet atheists.
;)

"

But imagine 50 years ago, or 100 years ago, the kind of person it would take to be an atheist

The only atheists back then were simply, dead atheists.

"

I should say, dependent on the genetic distribution of capacity for religious belief AND ALSO on the distribution of the bellcurve of IQ.
Perhaps they are covariants.
lol

"

Divguy, I just state facts.
Also, I am a practicing Sufi, not an anti-pluralist atheist.
Stick your fingers in your ears and shout lalala I don't really care.
The facts are that there is a negative correlation between religious belief and IQ. Why are so many scientists atheists? Why do college students become atheists?
My hypoth is higher IQ self-selects atheism.
It is not deterministic, because higher IQ homo sap. can choose, like Francis Collins or Ken Miller or Stu Hamerhoff.
Or perhaps it is, she says mischieviously, and dependent on the genetic distribution of capacity for religious belief.
;)

On “Thomas Aquinas Meets The Flying Spaghetti Monster

I don't understand why this is so difficult to understand. Religion is science-substitute for homo sap. without the substrate to "get" actual science. The attempts to push IDT into high school curriculae are attemts to force respect for IDT as the peer of evolution.
It's all about teh Respect.

"

I think you embarrass Aquinas here.
Atheism is simply not an alternative religion, it is the absence of religion.
Or rather the acknowledgement of the biological basis of behavior.

On “Casino Politics

Nah.
The risk to republicans is that if Obama succeeds, there will be no more GOP. Look at the British or French model of the large secular welfare state. Obama totally gets this, witness the "bitter clinging to guns and religion" comment.
No one will need religion if teh State provides all.

On “Sunday Poem

niiiiiice.
;)

On “not everyone who says he’s your friend is your friend

Helen you are blinkeredblinded onto the past.
Everything evolves.
Do you think a Bush will ever win again?
Jeb sure doesn't.

"

Pardon, teh Noble Yeoman Farmer.

"

Rawr, Helen you should reject them out of hand.
The Noble Yeoman is not capable of leading in teh Age of Complexity.
They simply don't have the substrate.
The sooner all parties involved can cowboy up and admit that the sooner we can move on.
;)

"

I liked this very much, Freddie.

Her position on party and loyalty threatens to leave her like the person who, out of loyalty, refuses to take the keys from her drunk friend, right before he drives her off of a cliff.

Keep on bringin' the sass please.

"

I think back to Helen's tribalism post, which is how I first read her.
I think I said something like this.
In the bad old days of the EEA (environment of evolutionary adaptation) tribes formed from consanginous kinship bonds. Super-tribes like religions formed as a means of spreading membership and fitness benefit to a wider memetic (instead of just genetic) tribe.
Government is an attempt to form a Meta-tribe of geolocation, insuring that more populous super-tribes do not oppress teh less populous.
Conservatives are having a very hard time seeing beyond the boundaries of their tribe.
Liberals....especially with Obama...seem to see the possibility that we are really one tribe.....the tribe of homosapiens sapiens.
Which tribe will get more membership and more reps do you think?

On “compromising yourself into the discussion

You don't get the basic dichotomy, yet do you?
The basis for small government is so that local churches can distribute welfare. Once we have large government that distributes those services, the idea of small government is doomed.
Look at Great Britain. Large government increases secularization of the population. There is a strong negative correlation between IQ and religious belief, in every country's population in the world except the US.....i think the hidden variable is small autonomous government.
Bush destroyed that model.
Now Obama is not only going to institute nat'l healthcare, but he will steal the faith based initiative and bricolage local churches into welfare engines.
I for one welcome the endless reign of Our New Liberal Overlords.
They couldn't be any worse.
That is ended.

"

Not just teh Stimulous.
I think Nate gets it right.
He was right about the 'lections, durr.
Republican Deathspiral.
Read my lips.
What does any constituant want from their representatives?
Powerless pouting?
I dont think so.

On “Emerging From the Hedged Roe

an even larger marjority of Americans (i.e., practically all of them) thinks that drawing the line at actual birth is a bad idea.

Look.....I feel like a talking parrot here, but that simply doesnt translate into a grassroots movement to strike down Roe.
An even greater majority is against striking down Roe.
So give up already.
Like I said, the culture war is over.
Evolutionary Theory of Culture and the evolution of population demographics has ended it.

On “compromising yourself into the discussion

pfft
The Party of teh Stupid is now the demographic minority.
The repubs have just provided us with an empirical demonstration that they are obstructionist, reactionary, and POWERLESS.
Good luck with that.

Your Magic 8ball Prection is...........Doom.
lol

"

Mostly I am just awestruck by Obama. He is one move ahead of the repubs right down line.
I keep going back to my Game Theory texts and marvelling over seeing EGT play out in the political theater.
Of course, it helps that the old dinosaurs Republican leadership falls right into Obamas clever mammalian traps everytime.

On “D. Linker on Culture War-Abortion

Seriously....eight years?
Did conservatives work to overturn Roe?
Nah. If they had cultcha life would cease to be politically useful as a voting issue and a tool to farm votes from the information-challenged republican base.

"

More importantly the view you hold has no legs culturally.
Evolutionary Theory of Culture 101-- culture doesnt shape society as much as society shapes culture according to its collective needs.
Own it....prolife issues are just a whip that the stealthy philosopher kings of the right side use to beat the low information electorate with.

On “Emerging From the Hedged Roe

I think pancascadian is right....the seven states with red majorities would implement abortion restriction, and that would just lead to another "intervention" by the Supremes.
Giant waste of time.
Surrender now, dorothies.

"

the effect of uniting both the pro-life and pro-choice sides of the issue.

But this simply isn't true.
Submitted empirical data--the epic fail of Colorado Prop 48.
There the electorate united against pro-life causes, 74% to 26%.
