  1. Our favorite restaurant in the universe (since closed) was a little place on the Vegas strip that specialized in “tapas”.

If you’re not familiar with that word, as we weren’t in 2005, just imagine hearing “we’re going to go eat at the tapas place.”

    “I beg your pardon.”

Anyway, the theory to “tapas” is that the appetizers are better anyway so just get those. Get 5 or 6 appetizers between 2 or 3 people and everybody gets their first and second pick and you can play the “oh, try this!” game with the stuffed mushrooms or the black and bleu steakbits and if you find something that makes the entire table moan, order a second plate of them.

The little place we went to has been closed for years and years, I guess, replaced with one that looks exactly the same and so googling for tapas places (or even tapas places that shuttered) isn’t that helpful.

But making a meal out of the appetizers can be a thing. Grab your main squeeze and a third wheel and make a night of it.Report

  2. Hear, hear for fried mozzarella!

Just tell yourself you’re eating at a small plate place. You order a bunch of appetizer sized entrees at those places, and after 2 or 3 you’re full. It’s much fancier to tell it like that.Report

  3. I sometimes have the fortitude to stick to an appetizer. But, like Andrew, only rarely. Even then, there’s often some sharing from other peoples’ entrees. I sometimes have the fortitude to stick to an appetizer and a salad or some soup. But again, only rarely.

I AM acquiring more ability to stop halfway through the entree and say “The rest of this is lunch for tomorrow, leave it be, dude.” And I’m pretty good at saying no to dessert. Most of the time.

As for P.F. Chang’s: wow is that stuff salty.Report

  4. I have noticed I tend to like better the appetizers than the mains in most restaurants I go to. Hence a lot of times I just get two appetizers, one served with the rest of appetizers, and one brought out with the rest of the main courses.

And eating out tapas is one of my favorite things in the world. It combines eating the best food in the world (Spain’s) with being super social, and sharing everything with your friends. Tapas is best eaten in a group of four or more, so we can really load the table with lots of different yummy things.Report
