The St. Louis Cardinals organization has been so excellent for so long that it’s hard to imagine that before the 1920s, they were seen as hapless bottom-feeders. From 1892 to 1916 (the 25 seasons they had been in the National League when this cartoon was inked), the Cardinals’ highest finish was 3rd, and they managed that only once. In 22 of the 25 seasons, they finished in the bottom division.

In 1916, the Cardinals finished tied for last in the NL. Brooklyn, led by Wilbert Robinson, won the pennant but lost the World Series to the Red Sox. John McGraw’s New York Giants finished fourth. The Cubs finished a distant fifth (26.5 games out).

Cleveland finished sixth in the American League, and would have to wait until 1920 for its pennant.Report
