Weekend Plans Post: The La-Z-Boy
In 1970, my father purchased a La-Z-Boy chair. It was one of the good ones. A rocking lounger. Wood handles, fluffy cushions, a satisfying “grrrrrsup” as you leaned back and pulled the handle. It was “Daddy’s Chair”. We could sit in it, of course… if we didn’t go crazy with the rocking and if there wasn’t a football game on.
After I got married and got my own place, Mom told me “guess what!” and I got the La-Z-Boy. It fit differently when I was out on my own. I rocked it gently, I took naps in it, and enjoyed the noise the chair made when I leaned back and pulled the handle.
I occasionally talked about the chair with mom, remembering Dad showing it off to people and she says that they bought two of them after they got married. She talks about taking a class with him in grad school and he passed a note to her that said “I’d rather be at home, sitting in our La-Z-Boys.”
I’m trying to find a picture of it online and… it’s kind of this one that I lifted off of Reddit’s “Buy It For Life” subreddit:
It’s not that color, though. It’s a nice brick red, instead.
Or, sigh, it *WAS*.
The chair gave up the ghost this week, you see. It finally broke. I called mom. “You know the red La-Z-Boy? It finally died.” Mom waxed philosophical about how it is the nature of matter to decay and she told me that it was fine. She got rid of her paired La-Z-Boy years and years back. She was pleased that this one lasted as long as it did.
And so… what do you do when your 54 year old chair dies? Well…
We went to Platte Furniture. It’s a used furniture store that specializes in amazing stuff. Not just “buy it for life” kinda chairs, also stuff like vintage Pepsi bottle coolers or typeset cabinets or something to get the man who has everything: a vintage gas pump. Perhaps you want a coyote.
I mean, I *HATE* shopping for furniture and I *LOVE* going to Platte Furniture because they always have something that makes me say “You know… maybe I do need a traffic light.”
And then, of course, “Where would you put it?” and then I stop daydreaming about it.
Anyway, we found a La-Z-Boy that Maribou said felt exactly like Dad’s old chair did. And we found that it was part of a set of two identical chairs. AND THE SET WAS STILL LESS THAN WE HAD BUDGETED. YES, AFTER DELIVERY FEES.
So we got a set of La-Z-Boys. Full circle.
They get delivered soon.
So… what’s on your docket?
