The rings are obviously a confusion with Saturn. OTOH, in 1912 the question of canals on Mars was still being hotly debated by real astronomers. In the space of about a century, we went from ground-based telescopes that weren’t good enough to resolve the question and sending machinery to land on the surface and take a close look.Report
