2024 Oscar Projections: Pre-Televised Awards Edition
We are a little under a month and three more projection updates by me away from Oscars’ nominations morning on January 23rd. We’ve turned the calendar from 2023 to the actual year the ceremony will be held on in 2024. We are in a very vulnerable place for those of us who attempt to predict this stuff. Since Thanksgiving we’ve been used to a certain set of Best Picture contenders and critical darlings up and down the ballot having their way. Thus its easy to fall into a certain place of comfortability with how things look likely to be as we start hitting the homestretch of critics’ season and head into the industry stage of things.
But the thing is that every single year the industry decides to throw us for a loop and do their own thing. Films that looked strong among critics start to lose steam. Showy performances that aren’t the popular critics picks go from underdogs to frontrunners. And movies that mostly everyone thought were either also rans or outright snub-able, suddenly surge and become competitive to win the Best Picture prize. So many have become accustomed to certain consensuses from the critics’ stage of the awards race, but the industry is more likely than not about to show us they aren’t critics and wiling to veer from that critical consensus. And knowing that, its very easy for our predictions and expectations to get shaken up. Changes are coming to the race, and as someone who has become a bit bored by how stagnant things have felt since Thanksgiving I welcome any chaos the industry wants to cause.
This Saturday the growing major critics group that is the Hollywood Creative Alliance will stream their Astra Awards followed by the Golden Globes’ now significantly expanded membership having their say on national television the very next night. Next weekend the Critics Choice Awards take place on national television as well. BAFTA will be revealing their longlists for consideration this Friday and many industry-based guilds will be announcing their nominations including the all-important Actors, Directors, and Producers’ guilds next week. The upcoming first televised awards of the season will either see some critical darlings strengthen their position with the biggest critics groups or more populist members among these groups will try to get ahead of the industry on certain more Oscar-bait performances to award.
I’ve been writing about the Best Picture race for Ordinary-Times since the 2020 awards season and before that have followed the ups and downs of the race since I was in fifth grade, and I have never seen the field for the predicted ten see such little change coming out of the fall festivals. I have literally kept nine of the same ten since the fall and all ten since the critics’ stage of the season began. The only major change to the race has been The Color Purple going from a sure-fire contender to one fighting to get saved by guilds and hoping its support with the Hollywood Creative and Critics Choice groups made its screeners top of mind for industry voters. Other than that its been an amazingly stable and frankly kind of boring race.
But I do think we’re in for some serious shifting among the final two or three slots. Movies like The Color Purple, ‘Spiderverse’, Air, etc can suddenly look stronger to get in thanks to guild support. Movies like Anatomy Of A Fall, The Zone Of Interest, May December, or even a Society Of The Snow can see international groups like BAFTA push one or two of them into the lineup. Every year at least one film that no one is taking seriously as win-competitive at this point in the race, manages to surge with industry voters to either come close (The Father, All Quiet On The Western Front) or win (CODA). I have to think we’ll see something similar this year. After months and various updates waiting for it to happen, I think the likely Best Picture lineup is about to see a shake-up.
But all that said Oppenheimer still remains the movie to beat. As I write this it is starting to become the most awarded Best Picture winner among critics, and Christopher Nolan has such a lead in wins for Best Director that I now believe that race has shifted from just tilting his way to leaning even more towards him as we head into the televised awards. Since the 2018 season the popular critics pick for the big prize has finished top two at Oscar and the popular critics pick for Director has seen their movie finish top two even longer than that streak. I believe ‘Oppy’ is one of the top two contenders for what will be our Best Picture winner this year. The only question is which will emerge its main competition? There is a debate to be had for multiple movies being it, but I do wonder if that annual late surger has yet to enter the conversation.
Below you’ll find my post Oscars shortlists and pre televised awards projections for the upcoming Oscars ceremony. I’ve expanded from just the eight above-the-line categories to all of them. I’ll be updating these again after the guild nominations and televised awards and then one last time after BAFTA’s nominations come out days before the Oscars’ do. For now all we can do is sit back and watch to see what the industry will decide to do differently than critics have, and what momentum will be carried by the televised awards’ results.

My first thought was “How many Oscars does Scorsese have by now?” and since I figured that the answer was “five or so”, I thought that Killers of the Flower Moon wouldn’t have a shot. As it turns out… he’s just got one. For “The Departed”.
That’s not the one that I would have given one but… I guess The Academy had to stick their thumb in somebody’s eye and giving it to Polanski was the best way to do that.
Anyway, my money’s on Scorsese for that one. They’ll give it to Oppenheimer for the quality of the film but I’m guessing that there’s still some animosity over the whole superheroes thing and they’ll want to give the statue to the guy who didn’t sell out. Nolan will get it next time, maybe.Report
