Weekend Plans Post: The First Cold Front
Last week, it was in the 90’s. Quintessential August weather. Hot, muggy, the air conditioner in the bedroom wouldn’t touch it. The kitties turned into feline puddles that wanted treats and one pet… but not two.
Popsicles, lemonade, and the occasional Brain Freeze from 7-11 was all we could do to fend off the worst of it.
But then the weatherman promised us a cold front, of sorts. It was going to hit Saturday, then Sunday… and it finally showed up after sundown on Monday.
The rains came. The skies opened. Thunderstorms. We saw one beautiful instance of cloud-to-cloud lightning that went all the way across the sky. You had to turn your head to catch the whole thing. Then, seconds later, a thundering that followed the same path. Maribou and I were visiting friends for dinner and, as we ran to the car, we made little surprised noises at the coldness of the droplets and then, as we got in the car, we exclaimed to each other that we were actually cold!
The AC got turned off as we drove home.
That night, the bedroom AC got turned into the bedroom fan and we actually needed a blanket that night. It got under 60 degrees!
The next day, Alice came over to Maribou for some long cuddles and even wanted a *BLANKET*.
Of course, by Thursday, we were back in the mid-80s.
But it was nice, even if just for a couple of days, to remember that summer would very soon be over. Back to fuzzies. Back to hoodies. Back to blankies. Back to warm desserts rather than cold ones.
This weekend, however, is going to be in the 70’s. Not going to be suitable for any of that. Yet.
So… what’s on your docket?

My home renovation is FINALLY done. Kitchen floor (the last step) was completed Wednesday evening, the demolition dumpster left yesterday. I still haven’t paid the guy the balance of the cost (he’s from out of town so it requires him and his office manager being up here for me to hand off a check), but I now have the money necessary to pay it off in full.
It’s a giant relief. Last night I cleaned my kitchen (grit everywhere from when they removed the old ceramic tile and broke up its grout) and put everything back in that I had taken out.
Don’t get a lot of relaxation time tomorrow; there’s a memorial service for someone who was a long time ago a member of my department and who was in my AAUW group, who died a little unexpectedly last month. What I would *rather* be doing is working on prepping my sewing room to eventually be painted (that’s my plan for over labor day – move as much out of there as I can and paint the walls a “fun” color) or sewing or even just going and doing “big” grocery shopping at a store a half-hour away but that carries things the local stores do not.
Monday, classes start. I don’t know where the summer went.Report
Hurray hurrah! It felt like it would never be done!
The sewing room sounds like a fun project. Or one of those projects that will be fun for the first third, anyway. Good luck!Report
When I glanced down at the temp reading leaving the grocery store, I noted that it was 67 degrees.
When I got home, it was 63.
It’s gonna be a good weekend.Report
We didn’t even bother to open any additional windows today.Report
