Saturday Morning Gaming: Playing with Craiyon

I’m sure you’ve seen people posting their Dall-E art and after seeing some really great stuff, you’ve submitted your application to play around with it as well and you’re sitting and waiting…

and waiting…

and waiting…

And not getting access.

Well, there’s good news! There’s an AI tool out there that is usable RIGHT NOW called “Craiyon” and you don’t have to wait forever to get your picture. More like you have to wait a minute.

It’s not particularly great with faces but does a shockingly good job of getting the essence of a character of a face down. Like, here’s Snoop Dogg drinking a pepsi in front of the Liberty bell:

While that’s not perfect, I’m pretty sure that someone would look at a couple of those pictures and be able to guess “did you want Snoop drinking a pepsi in Philly?”

You can ask it to do different styles as well:

I find myself keeping running back to playing “STUMP THE AI” and asking for absurd situations with licensed characters or famous people… “statue of Chef Boyardee in Chicago” or “bob dylan conducting an orchestra with a light sabre” or similarly silly and outlandish things but I’m also noticing that you could come up with some pretty awesome handouts for your D&D group using this tool.

“You all are walking down the tunnel when the ground changes from dirt and rocks to tile. The sides of the tunnel become carved stone and, a few yards later, there are carvings in the walls.”

And pick one of these and print it out and hand it around the group.

And I’m not sure that I’m even scratching the surface.

I did get my Dall-E invite yesterday. FINALLY. I requested it in February or January and had pretty much just given up. Of course, I wanted to start playing with it but it seems to have more protections than Craiyon. For example, I asked for Dall-E to make a picture of “Raggedy Andy playing craps” and that tripped their filter and the ai said it wouldn’t do it.

I did manage to successfully ask Dall-E to give me a picture of Joyce Carol Oates burping into a microphone at an open mic poetry night:

That’s pretty good! Gets the essence, I think.
