Saturday Morning Gaming: The Sexy Brutale
Okay, you know how, in the board game Clue, it’s your job to figure out that Mr. Boddy was killed by Colonel Mustard in the Billiard Room with the Candlestick? Well, what if you were in the game and given a magical stopwatch that would let you run around before anything happened?
Like, you could hide the candlestick?
Well, in The Sexy Brutale, you’re in a weird Groundhog’s Day situation where you’re stuck in the same 12 Hour Period where various masqued murderers are trying to kill various masqued Mr. Boddies. It’s your job to interact with the environment (you’re not interacting with the killers!) and make sure that the various Boddies don’t hit the floor.
Here. Let’s look at what the Tutorial has you do. It gives you a brief tutorial on moving around the rooms and opening doors (and otherwise interacting with your environment), it teaches you how to peep through keyholes and listen for footsteps. (You’re not allowed to interfere with either the masqued murderers or the masqued murderees.)
Then, peeping through a keyhole, you witness the murder of Reginald Sixpence!
The Two of Diamonds in the Chapel with the Rifle.
It then tells you to wind your pocketwatch back and you get to relive the day. Reginald is still alive! The Two of Diamonds has not yet shot him!
We have to figure out how to make this murder not happen in the first place. If you guessed “maybe fiddle with the gun?”, you’re right on track. After Reginal Sixpence is spared, you then have to prevent the murders of others in the house. And, of course, figure out what in the heck is going on.
This is an amazing puzzle game and figuring out how to prevent the murders is a *LOT* of fun. The game has some fun misdirection. Like, you can’t *HIDE* the gun. You can’t steal the bullets either. How do you make sure that Reginald doesn’t get shot?
And then you have to save Clay Rockridge! And Trinity Carrington! And Willow Blue!
AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IN THE HECK IS GOING ON?!?!?
The Mansion is fun to explore, the different little places to examine are laugh-out-loud funny, and the mystery is surprisingly rewarding. Check it out.
So… what are you playing?

We are in a new house, and our stuff has been delayed until Tuesday, so there really isn’t much else to do but play video games. I’ve mostly been playing Shin Megami Tensei V. I’ve probably talked about it here before, but just in case I haven’t, I’ll give the brief synopsis. The game play is similar to Pokemon, except instead of capturing wildlife in balls and forcing them to fight for you in battle, you recruit demons to your side. This is done by convincing them to do so and paying them substantial amounts of money, health, and/or items.
The game is alternates between “normal” Tokyo and Post-Apocalyptic Tokyo. Instead of representing Good and Evil, God and the Angels represent Order while the Lucifer and the Demon’s represent Chaos. There are different endings depending on alignment. The game can be tough, and it is important to have the right party for encounters. If you hit with an element that an enemy is weak to, you get an extra action. If you hit with something they are immune to, you lose an action. The same happens when enemies attack you. If your party is weak to your enemy’s element and they do not have weaknesses to any of yours, it can be a bad time, even in random encounters. There are also buffs and debuffs, and they are more essential in this game than a lot of others. You never really get a huge health pool, so things remain dangerous.
I also started Metroid Dread, but I think I will save that for next week.Report
It’s gonna be a busy week for me gaming. A big new Genshin patch comes out tonight, so there will actually be some new content to play. Then Friday is a big day, with the Horizon Forbidden West launch. I actually took some days off so I can binge play it.
Funny thing, in an act of sheer randomness I bought Persona 5 on sale from the Sony store. There is no way I’m going to try and play it now, as I doubt I could wrap it all up in a week (she says ironically), and I don’t want to try playing three games at once after HFW comes out, but still… I will eventually play it and one of two things will happen: I will love it or I will hate it with the passion of a thousand suns. I’m curious to find out which.Report
