Persecution: RNC Censors Cheney, Kinzinger
From the Washington Post:
In an extraordinary rebuke, the Republican National Committee on Friday voted Friday to condemn Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), the two Republican members of a House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.
The censure resolution passed overwhelmingly on a voice vote without debate or discussion, with the whole process taking about one minute. The party said the behavior of Cheney and Kinzinger “has been destructive to the institution of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Republican Party and our republic.”
The resolution accused the two of participating in a “Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse” as the committee investigates the insurrection in which a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building, injured 140 members of law enforcement and vandalized the Capitol to stop the affirmation of Joe Biden’s electoral college win. The attack led to the deaths of five people.
This right here is where the action is at. Republican’s are going full violent overthrow of the gov is just fine as long as you are incompetent about it. There will be no investigation of 1/6 if you aren’t on the team then Fu.Report
Their conversion to a full insurrectionist revolutionary faction is complete.Report
And if the Republicans have lost Chip….Report
In fairness, what are more persuadable people supposed to think of this? That we can expect repeat events, this time with GOP office holders officially on board with the mob?Report
Always attack….that is the modern trumpy and internet style of comms. Always attack even when you have no way to defend what is happening. In fact attacking is even better when you can’t defend. Just attack someone.Report
Beats the hell out of admitting fault or accepting responsibility. DeSantis preferred attacking to acknowledging that Nazis are bad.Report
So then You agree with the RNCs characterization of January 6th?Report
Did I say I did? I just have to push back at Chip’s daily declaration that now the Republican Party has crossed the line.Report
They crossed the line a while ago, I just need to repeat it every day that they travel farther beyond it.Report
Well if you believe the National Review – as I quote below, they have. If you believe Mike Pence – they have. That the left saw this decades ago and started screaming about it, all the while being told to go sit in the corner and suck our collective thumb is I suppose now beside the point.Report
That was done on 1/6/21.Report
McDaniel’s claim now is that “legitimate political discourse” refers to Trumpworld’s attempt to overturn the election via the legal and political system. This is pleading guilty to a greater charge.Report
Coming against the confession by former VP Pence that he couldn’t legally do anything to stop the certification, this is clearly a move by the Trumpista to consolidate their hold in the GOP.
God help us all.Report
Interesting that a post about the RNC embracing political violence got so few comments. I guess it’s what we expected.Report
The radicalization and yearning for violence that is the modern GOP is like the creature in It, where the “adults”, meaning the media pundits and Republican apologists, are simply unwilling to see It or acknowledge It’s existence.
Or maybe a better analogy is how the family of an abusive drunk just keeps pretending that all is normal and well, even as they go to increasingly extreme and bizarre steps to tiptoe around the beast.
Trump goes around telling people how he tried to overthrow an democratic election and we get thumbsucking thinkpieces on Joe Biden traveling to Delware.
A violent mob tries to murder half of Congress and we get furrowed brows over Ibram Kendi.
The GOP and Fox News spread anti-vax misinformation during a pandemic which has killed a million Americans and we get “Some people say” stuff about Joe Rogan, the “Just Asking Questions” guy.Report
Well now, even the National Review thinks the RNC has gone too far. There’s a new day dawning I guess.

NR has always criticized the RNC.
I read the censure. I think it was a jumbled mess. I wouldn’t have signed it, but I could have signed a different censure for the two. I believe in accountability for January 6. This committee has no path toward increasing accountability, and never had any intention of pursuing one. The protest, the committee, and the censure were all garbage moves.Report
The Select Committee has two paths to accountability – criminal referrals to the DoJ and legislation after it concludes its work. Both will come, though the later may be too little too late.Report
I have yet to hear any explanation for why the committee would be able to find crimes the DoJ couldn’t. As for legislation, Congress can do it any time they want to, whether based on DoJ or committee information.Report
How dare they betray their party in defense of the rule of law?Report
