So wife tries desperately to please husband, to extract a drop of affection from him, and man withdraws. To the bar, no less. Uninvolved third party blames this on the wife.
I suspect that had she busied herself doing some other thing the perspective would have been “look at this wife, so consumed by her own endeavors she is no longer focused on her marriage” and then “a dash of bitters, Bill.” That tactic was widely used on the suffragettes and the female prohibitionists, to paint them as ignoring their family in favor of their cause.
It’s so interesting to see how pervasive this attitude is across time and space.Report
