When I was going up in the Northeast, going to community college was considered a sign of being an inattentive dolt in high school because you did not do well enough to obtain omission to a four-year college/university. I think this is still the case.
In California, it is considered financially and academically savvy because it is apparently easier to get to Berkeley and UCLA and other top UCs from community college than straight from high school.*
*There is still some snobbery. California has a guarantee of getting into a UC if you attended public high school in California and graduated with a certain GPA (don't remember how much). In practice, this means UC-Merced has a place for you and California parents and students loathe this because UC-Merced is near nothing and considered the also ran of UCs.
