On “Bonus Good Works

My point here was that folks do tend to get up in arms when extended hunting seasons, or hired mercernaries are paid to kill a few hundred deer. You get all the bambi lovers and the anti gunners and the paranoid, not to mention some due concern over reckless hunters. As a result, the population of deer continue to rise and hazard folks on roads. So I'm agreeing with you. Deer do need a predator. Soon, though, they coyote will be all over the east coast..even in suburban lawns.

On “How To: Cook A Ramp Slurry

As a previous consumer of ramps I can confirm that the stench does indeed linger a long time after eating...and it not only stanks up the fridge, but the freezer as well. :)

When I was married, the wife wouldn't kiss me for several days after I ate them.

On “From one bourbon newbie to another…

Dave,

The Pappy's 20 year old, when I got it (as a gift for someone) was @ 150 USD. The 23 year old was over 200 USD. To me the difference in cost between the two bottles far outweighed the quality of the drink. I think that's applicable to most aged alcohol. At some point marginal improvement in the quality of the drink becomes negligible. The sweet spot for me between cost and flavor is 20 years max.

Now, that being said, I've never tried the bourbous you've mentioned, but Pappy's was very smooth and didn't have a lot of dominant oak, as I recall. I'd describe it as very smooth, balanced, with some carmel/sweet notes and a nice finish.

I think you'd be able to tell the difference, but good luck actually getting a bottle! It's become very trendy.

On “Bonus Good Works

Tru dat...especially since folk get all annoyed when the state wants to add hunting days to reduce the population.

I think it's more like "we don't know what companies / gov'ts have on us so we're not alarmed.

If they saw the data, there would be a riot.

"Let’s cut the crap. We have a serious problem with privacy and data collection. It needs to be addressed." Yep, but the cat is out of the bag and to a large entent, it's too late.

There is a difference between Bloomberg and the Gov't, which should be obvious.

None of the above doesn't mean I'm not a big supporter of privacy--rigerous privacy-I think we should start with the European model, and that it should apply to the gov'ts access to our data as well. I know what's out there, I've seen demos of it.

On “Bonus Good Works

Given that all gov't action is compulsion backed up by the threat of violence, I'd say there is no net net good in public policy.

On “Rand Paul: “Benghazi Mission Should Have Been Under the Military”

I'm sorta on the fence on separate rights within the US for citizens and non. I mean, on one hand, that's the whole frickin' point of being a US citizen. If you're not a citizen of the US, why would you get a right to vote in our elections, etc.

No, basic constitutional liberties, would seem to apply well to non citizens in the US. Free speech, etc. But I'm not sure how much more than that on a federal level should be granted. Maybe this should be a separate posting for fuller discussion?

Dave,

You're totally on point here on all your topics in this post.

After visiting Scotland, I picked up a single malt scotch ranking book and single mindely went though it tasting all the 80+ scored bottles I could get my hands on (over about a decade). It was fun and I do consider myself a connoisseur, but the price / value propisition is always in my mind.

I've also got into bourbon and I enjoy it quite a lot. I've had both the 20 and 23 year old Pappy's, and IT IS VERY GOOD, but the price / value ration between the 20 and the 23 year old,at least several years ago, wasn't worth it. The 20 was good enough. Now, since it's gotten so trendy, I can't even get it.

Neither the single malts or Pappy's is what I would call "regular drinking" booze, it's more for special occasions or as an indulgence, and I'm currenly enjoying some lower priced brands. It looks like the suggestion above are worth investigating.

On “Self Criticism!

They ain't real libertarians then is they?

On “Rand Paul: “Benghazi Mission Should Have Been Under the Military”

I think there are a couple of points here...bear with me...

If Rand IS "the darling of the anti-interventionist crowd, champion of civil liberties, world peace and end of all US military intervention abroad, Sainted Martyr for Speaking out Against Drone Based Tyranny, &c." then he wouldn't be talking about this. If he had his way, there would be NO US presence there.

I do think that Benghazi was a total screw up, but if the decision was made, for whatever reason, not to go in, we deserve to know that. This thing smacks of a cover up-if only for political reasons, and if Clinton had any involvement in said cover up, she deserves all due condemnation.

Lastly, I do think there should be a bright line between US citizens and and non. There are laws and rules that apply for within the US and those rules/laws do not necessarily apply past our borders. It is in our national interest to consider our citizens first, all others second. That being said, that's not license to drone strike non-citizens or render foreigners to some torture facility we run/monitor in a foreign country.

On “Self Criticism!

Interesting post. Comments TL/DR (all of them)

One of my essential arguemnts with both the "left" and "right" is that hypocracy and lack of consistent logic. Bush was the DEVIL for all that torture stuff but when BOB continues the same policy the level of outrage drops to a whisper. This goes for both sides of course for any issue. It's never about what's right, it's about political advantage.

At least the Libertarians I've look into and read were consistent in their application of logic to laws and policy.

On “Time for Heads to Roll at the White House and IRS

So this has been all over the news, and frankly, it's a concern to me. But to think that politically motivated IRS audits and "looking into" stuff 1) hasn't happened before, 2) happens on both sides, 3) will continue to happen as long as their is an IRS and politicians, is plain damn foolish.

Folks recall IRS employees looking up celebrity / political figure's tax returns from a while back? Of course.

All that being said, I support a full, complete, transparant investigation followed quickly by public hangings of the guilty individuals. Will it happen? If it was a few low rogue folks, they'll be hanged. If it was political? It'll fall off the radar soon and things will get back to normal since NEITHER side has any interest in changing the status quo, just making political points.

Curious that you mentioned the citizenship, because I agree. YOU were not given any choice. Why is that? Why is it that the US gov't automatically decides for YOU that you are a US citczen if you are born in a certain geographical region? Who gave them the authority to tell you or me who I am?

"There was a vote and I lost". I hear that a lot except I didn't vote for it as I wasn't around to vote for it. I see no legit moral reason why I should be burdened with obligations people long dead stuck me with when I had no say it it. That's not democracy.

Now as to how I define conservaties? I define them as statists who want to extract my money to spend on certain pet projects of theirs. In that, they are just like liberals; only the pet projects change.

On “Why You Should Stop Being a Loyal Employee

Well, everyone is replaceable.

That being said, I know exactly what you mean, especially about making decisions above your pay grade. I worked in a Joint Venture start up where we were all doing 1k things just to get though the day and then went to a job where there were 4 decision makers and staff waiting months to get a decision. God it was chaffing. Since I was remote, I just did stuff and flew under the radar. Local staff said I was the only one who got stuff done for them. Coupled with the majority of workers to stop everything until a manager makes a decision, I just got fed up and did stuff. No one seemed to want to risk anything or risk being wrong. They forget that inaction is action itself. Just do something, make a decision. If it's wrong, change direction, but don't just sit there hesitating.

Now, as to loyality, I'm on similar lines as you but slightly different. I recognize, especially in this economy, that I'm disposable, more so now. So my employer gets the minimal amout of loyality until they demostrate some on the return. Yes, I'll step up and make a decision, etc like above, but I'm not busting my ass anymore on the vague hopes of advancement. So, yeah, I'll work OT to get that proposal out that's due, but don't expect me make a habit of it.

On “Ideology is the Enemy: Prelude

Indeed you are correct. But again, as I said, it depends upon your definition. If you subscribe to 1780's mindset, then it's not radical to want to go back to them, it was radical to go away from them. Anyway, my point is not to argue that conservatives want this, it's more of a mind game.

Now, as to SS, you're dead wrong. Case in point: it was imposed on me-and it was imposed on your grandfather and father and you. I don't want it, never wanted it, and can't get my money back that was extracted from my paychecks. It was imposed on every generation since the program was created.

On “At My Real Job

The issues I've always had with statist is their lack of logic.

If abortion is ok because a woman owns her own body and can do with it what she wants (abortion) then why can't I sell a kidney? It's my body and I'll do with it what I want. When they defend the illegality of selling a kidney, I come back to, "why is that different than an abortion" and their usual response is "because".

"

I'd likely agree with this assumption. I think the Repubs generally think that way, at least the leadership. But Libertarians also share a lot with the "left"-the drug war, etc.

Maybe the conservaties need to be reminded of that.

On “Ideology is the Enemy: Prelude

I don't agree there is some ideological statue of limitations.

"And really, it says something that the idea of ‘ideal society’ is stuff Americans dispensed with a hundred or more years ago and never wanted back." The fact that stuff changed doesn't prove it was wanted. One could argue that it was imposed.

"

I'm going to pull a "Bill Clinton". It depends upon the defintion of "conservative" then doesn't it? However, I generally get around all this labeling problem since I use the term "constitutionalist".
