More an indication of what society is dealing with. This was not a misunderstanding between the cop and the woman. The choice came down to shooting her or letting her force her way past him and drive off.

He made some bad calls and the legal system needs to deal with him. However it's also true that we can't assume good intentions from her.

I get very nervous when politicians talk about the "progress" made on a tiny sliver of a much larger problem.

For perspective: LA as a whole had 75,518 homeless (on one night in Jan '23)
https://apnews.com/article/los-angeles-county-homeless-f6c43a705d244d60f20236ce8fed804c

That decrease from 4,402 to 3,791 is a drop of about 600 people, or less than one percent of the overall problem. That drop is a good thing... unless the politicians fudged the numbers by having the cops move 600 people from skid row and now they're homeless somewhere else.

If we assume the numbers are real, then we have a program which can help a homeless person at a cost of $100k per person.

Philip: Palestinians thriving with the same level of security and self determination as Israelis.

Might be time to offer them a country again if they're willing to give up the right to return. We have to do that once or twice a generation just to showcase that it really is the Palestinians who are insisting the conflict needs to continue.

I can (and do) WFH about 4 days of the week. In reality it's more like 4 weeks out of 5 but whatever. If I have to go in it's about a ten minute drive.

I get to decide for myself whether any specific task needs me in the office. That might be a Senior Staff level thing but I have much more junior coworkers that do the same thing.

"

JB: If the BIAJ jobs are allowed to WFH, we’re going to see a bit of a class divide.

True. We can put it on the long list of other class divides.

Now the really good news is if expensive high wage workers start working from other states, then maybe housing prices come down and expensive cities get their acts together and compete on price.

"

Chip: I would think that “best practices” would entail trusting doctors and women to handle the situation as they see best,

We're past the point of pretending that the gov isn't going to be heavily involved in health care.

Chip: without the prospect of a district attorney deciding some time later that he disagrees and then filing a murder charge.

I checked to see if this has happened anywhere and as far as I can tell, the only DA who has tried anything like it is himself being sued.

Wiki claims the questioning of her gender is without foundation. She is a born cis female.

Stabber fits the profile for lone wolf loser / mental illness a lot more than it being "his parents were immigrants" thing.

How do we get four counts of murder from one bullet? Even if we count the fetus, that's two.

Hmm... seems cop that shot put himself right in front of the car and then she was trying to push him off with the car so she could drive off. Doesn't seem like a good move on his part, either in his positioning or him shooting as opposed to moving so he wouldn't get run over.

Seems she was guilty of shoplifting if that matters. 21 years old, pregnant with her 3rd, due in a couple of months and stealing alcohol.

Our new hire works in India.

Management tried to force us back to the office then we had another wave of Covid and they realized they'd hired more people than would fit in our new building. I suspect remote is cheaper just because they don't need another building.

"

How it gets fixed is time goes on and everyone figures out best practices under the new legal setup.

On “JD Vance and Yawgmoth’s Bargain

Now this by itself isn’t *THAT* powerful… but there are a handful of combos you can use to make it deadly… specifically, these two:

I can think of others. Mirror Universe swaps life totals with your opponent. Basically any deck which is speed/burn might benefit from this... although the 6 mana to cast thankfully means it's not a turn two thing.

On “Tim Walz Tapped to be VP Kamala Harris Running Mate

Probably we need to look for other VPs who did good in the main job so that's Johnson and Ford.

"

Dick Cheney.

The charisma of a slug and brought zero electoral votes with him.

Picked because W was weak on how Washington worked and he figured he'd need help governing.

On “Tim Walz announced as Kamala Harris’s running mate

Team Blue is on both sides of the war AND they can't afford a split. Ergo they need to promise both sides they have their full support without pointing out that there's not much they can do.

Although honestly the entire line of reasoning seems seriously over blown. Hamas supporters may all be in Team Blue but they are tiny and should be ignored.

Of course that's me trying to ignore emotional arguments. A brutal war looks really bad so we don't want there to be one in Gaza.

Treading water is much better than sinking the ship.

It's a safe choice from someone who needed to make a safe choice.

On “Asian Markets Have A Horrible Monday, US Markets Set For Fall

I start with "one year" to eliminate various yearly cycles.
And with one year we look pretty solid.

We're certainly down from the peak from about 6 weeks ago but I don't care about weekly trends.

"

I don't see a "down" market. Looks like a bouncy linear line up.

On “RFK and Dead Cubs

3rd parties are created without having all the issues solved or even addressed.

The original GOP was formed to get rid of Slavery because both of the existing parties were "big tent" which meant tolerating it.

What we lack is a big issue that is capable of creating a new party... and if such an issue came along it is hard to see how it doesn't get absorbed by the existing two.

Not terrorism. No known motive.

17 year old male. Way to bet is he'll fit the profile of our school shooters, loser committing suicide to get fame.

On “Sleepwalking Towards Another Trump Presidency

I disagree.

Realistically the only one who can replace Biden at this point is his VP. IF his VP could do a better job at beating Trump than Biden, then we'd have a different world. She's not capable.

I think most of the "replace Biden" folks aren't going to vote for him anyway.

On “A Semi-Short Explainer of Presidential Immunity Decision

Cannon is the problem with that case, not the Supremes.

On “Supreme Court Strikes Down “Bump Stock Ban” 6-3

It is impossible to have a militia if civilians don't have guns.

Ergo the founders put into the Constitution that citizens had the right to have guns.

It's not an unlimited right, but jumping from "not unlimited" to "the state can disarm everyone" is unreasonable.

"

If you're pointing to the dictionary and claiming it's wrong and that the 2ndAM really is about giving the state gun control then I think you're in wishful thinking territory.

On “The Battle of the Big Brains

As far as I can tell, Team Red is only accusing Biden of having mental problems because it's obvious Trump does.

Subtract the hit jobs and I don't see a "there" there.

Trump's various antics are public record and they look a lot like dementia and/or other serious mental disorders. We're past him being a free spirit and deep into him actually believing what he says.
