Why be an asshole? Pinky just disagrees with you on some things. He's made an effort to have a reasonable discussion with you, too bad you aren't able to return the favor.

"

The book"Gender Queer" seems to come up a lot -- there are many stories about parents complaining about this book being in a school library or being taught, and the book variously being removed or not. Here's a link to an article that shows a lot of pictures from it (the article takes a side but presumably they aren't making up the content): https://theiowastandard.com/shocking-images-from-book-gender-queer-which-is-stocked-in-school-libraries-across-iowa/

So, I can see the argument for having this available in a high school library, but I can also easily understand parents not wanting this available, for reasons having nothing specifically to do with LGBT but just with the explicit nature of it.

Chelsea Clinton just tweeted objecting to "bans" on LGBT books, and this book was prominently displayed in the accompanying picture. Make of it what you will.

I think the disconnect is that Philip has an a priori belief that all workers outside of management deserve more money. He's not really thinking of cases where, e.g., people can look around and see total slack-offs getting the same rewards as the hard workers.

I saw this thought mentioned a few times by people I feel are generally reasonable and I was curious about it too -- I didn't take the time to watch any of Mulvaney's pics or videos myself but would definitely be interested to hear the opinion of people more knowledgeable in this area about whether Mulvaney strikes them as being genuine or more a performer.

"

I don't know how fair it is -- you never really know what's going to go viral. I'd be interested to see how many times this could potentially have happened before (i.e. a company working with an influencer to grow the market with one group that could have a backlash effect with another group) but just didn't, because the stars didn't align the right way.

But yes, no one should be surprised that the people in charge of this would be held responsible for the bad outcome, whether it could've been fairly anticipated or not -- that's just the way the world works.

Good to know what level you're on.

Just for your internal calibration, your "hall monitor" schtick is also dumb -- you're happy enough to criticize other people's commenting styles and attempt to enforce your own preferences. Time to retire it and move on to something less tired.

"

Just for your internal calibration, this was a dumb comment. You didn't understand Jaybird's comment, and what you're clumsily trying to snark at him about was actually the main point of his comment.

Chip, you’re a white guy - by your own rules you have no standing to accuse DM or anyone else of racism. If we need to ask Black or Jewish people what they think, then that means there’s no reason to give a flying fish what you think.

"

What I take from this is that you don't know how to answer my comment directly, so you try to redirect with your stereotype of "conservatives" - how that's relevant to me, I don't know, since I'm not a conservative. But you're still a white guy.

"

You're just doing your best to keep a black man down by imposing your white supremacist concepts on him. Powerful white men have been enriching each other for centuries, but as soon as a black man who grew up poor tries to get in on the game, he gets a flood of "oh no you're violating the unwritten rules about taking white people's money, you need to resign!" from white guys like you.

"

This article seems like a pretty even-handed evaluation -- suspicious, but probably not outside the letter of the rules as they existed.

I agree that these rules should be tightened up (and i guess some have been in the last few months).

"

By and large, the best way to get people to think something is not just another culture war hot button is to find a way to get the culture warriors to shut up for a hot second. Certainly the freakout about Nazi memorabilia did not help the cause of making this seem like a real issue.

"

Do you have a link or source that lays out the level/quantity of gifts that each justice has received over the last X years? I'm sure it's not literally 0 for all the other justices. I'm perfectly open to the possibility that Thomas is an outlier, i'm just looking to see if anyone has put in the legwork to flesh this out.

"

IMO the main problem with the accusations against Clarence Thomas at this point is that they're completely ad hoc. "This person in my political outgroup did something technically within the rules that looks really questionable to me!!!!" There are all kinds of associations between powerful people and rich people across the political spectrum -- I would take this more seriously if i saw some effort to do a broader accounting among all the justices first.

"

I had also read that she had apologized and the others hadn't, but I don't recall where i saw that.

Any time you start talking about differences in intelligence, there will be people who direct it in unfortunate ways, but that doesn't mean the info itself is wrong. The AI doomers use this same sort of thing to convey how utterly unfathomable a superintelligent AGI could be in relation to even the smartest among us.

Anyway, the thing I find most interesting is how different mental experiences and abilities can be from one person to the next, where it's not just a matter of degree but that some people can have completely different modes of thought.

I saw a comment on Twitter a while back (who knows if it's reliable, i haven't checked) describing a study that was done on people with sub-90 IQs -- apparently the researchers found that this population didn't understand the concept of hypothetical questions. Like, when they were asked "how would you have felt yesterday afternoon if you didn't have breakfast and lunch", they would answer "what are you talking about, I did have breakfast and lunch".

It's a truism that "politics is the mind-killer", but reading the above got me thinking about this in numeric terms. Like, someone could have an IQ of 105 and have normal intellectual capabilities, but once they start talking about politics, they get a -20 applied to their IQ and suddenly they can't grasp how hypotheticals and analogies work, and they struggle to engage in deductive reasoning. But they're used to thinking of themselves as basically smart & capable and don't realize that they've become situationally stupid.

"He’s guilty and should be convicted"

Are you making a legal argument about this specific case, or just voicing your feelings about him generally? People with actual domain knowledge seem to be mostly agreed that this particular case is legally questionable at best and was not a good use of prosecutorial discretion. It's a "dog" in the sense that it likely won't ultimately lead to a conviction, not that Trump has clean hands.

" I’ll also touch a third rail " -- is it really though? One could argue about specific numbers or percentages, but it's obvious that this happens.

"

" does not really analyze why various city governments felt it was important to add provisions at the time they were added."

This isn't actually important to his point. Anyone who's serious about good government needs to grapple with the fact that regulations aren't free -- there should be not just a solid ROI analysis for any individual regulation but also a concept of a regulatory budget. Prioritize the most effective/most important/highest ROI ones, don't just argue for each one in isolation.

I've been saying this for years, but sadly no one listens to me...

Oh hah, i guess it couldn't have been a few months ago -- hasn't even been out two months yet. Anyway I'll ask him.. though he often doesn't play games all the way through, so it might not be too meaningful if he bailed on this one. I used to think it was a bit of a character defect that he would stop playing as soon as he hit a wall, but eventually i realized that I was the one with the problem.
