They weren't hearing him ten years ago. They just liked it that an angry Holy Man was yelling that they were all inherently Sinnners who'd burn in Hell unless they shaped up real quick.

"

You're suggesting that people with bipolar depression or schizophrenia are senile? Interesting. Go on, I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on that subject.

"

"The Troubles are over in Ulster and have been for 30 years."

That's because in 1989 when the Cold War ended the Great Powers no longer had more important things to worry about than a bunch of car-bombers. Gerry Adams got the message and Ireland glide-pathed to a half-assed reconciliation; Arafat didn't and Palestine went to hell.

On “Vice Presidential Candidate Debate: Sen JD Vance vs Gov Tim Walz

It helped Walz a lot that people liked him, or at least were predisposed to like him. That got his pop-eyed gibbering and aimless rambles interpreted as "pleasant down-to-earth folksiness" rather than "signs of age-related mental illness and low intelligence".

"

"speaking to an audience" is actually a skill, or at least a process whose execution is bettered by experience. I know that my ability to talk without filling in a lot of "um" "uh" "ahhhhhh..." was greatly improved when I co-hosted a podcast for a while.

"

I think the only thing that would've moved the needle would've been if one of them had stepped on his dick, and that didn't happen.

Please stop doing this thing where you use mental-illness terminology to criticize Trump. I know you really want to dunk on him with the Trendy Online Jargon but this (and all the "sundowning" that we heard about back in 2016) is conflating him with people who have actual trouble.

"

Yeah, farmer's markets (and craft fairs) are one of the last bastion of the fiddle where you get a "discount" for paying cash. I could understand how the state would not want a highly-regulated (and -taxed) good being sold there.

On “Why a Trump Loss is Best for Conservatives

When you write "politically conservative", what do you mean by that? Do you mean they thought there should be laws banning the hard rock, drugs, and sexual flexibility they were indulging in, or do you mean something else?

Because I'll point to the Hell's Angels when Hunter Thompson was writing about them and how they too favored hard rock, drugs, and sexual flexibility, and how they too proved to be conservative sorts when it came to government policies regarding fiscal matters, immigration, and national defense.

"

"Uh huh and that is… *checks policy and dialogue from the actual Democratic party actors* … just about nil."

And the soda ban was only on some sizes of soda and it was rescinded right away so I don't know why anyone thought there would even be a problem!

"What’s unusual is that the key omitted variables were precisely measurable enough and documented thoroughly enough to enable someone to write a rebuttal compelling enough to get published."

Brother, I don't think that's unusual in itself. What's unusual is that someone actually did it.

On “The Baseball Rialto

http://ndl.ethernet.edu.et/bitstream/123456789/35632/1/09.pdf (search for "Arabella" to see the writing in question)

Between this and other references, it seems like this was an allegorical allusion to a team winning a baseball game.

As for this cartoon, it's referring to movies that were popular at the time; "Rialto" was (and remains) a common name for movie theaters.

Oh, now we have proof that Trump is a real piece of work? Wow! I had no idea.

"

"passively invested" is a class-war term, used by Working Class people to accuse someone of Cheating (in that they're getting money without doing Work.)

They don't realize they're making an argument against welfare, but class-war types aren't known for thinking through the implications of their accusations.

"

Bro, you don't understand how to fight religious wars. It doesn't matter if the tools you use to win could allow your enemy to hurt you afterwards because the first thing you do after you win is massacre any surviving enemies.

On “Missouri Conducts Controversial Execution of Marcellus Williams

This isn't an argument that the death penalty is okay, it's an argument that "the death penalty is expensive" is not a good way to go because a valid response is "okay, we shall pass a law saying that there can be no legal challenges to the process of court-determined sentencing by parties not directly involved, now the death penalty is no longer expensive".

"

The cost is similar to the cost of nuclear power plants, in that it's not actually very expensive to do but it's very expensive to deal with the legal requirements proving that you did it properly (and the lengthy process necessary to be allowed to do it at all.)

Meaning, "it saves money if you don't do this thing" is not actually a valid argument because the thing being expensive is a choice we've made, not an inherent part of it.

"And again, why did only the American mousetraps exhibit this? Why is crime only so contagious in America?"

hey guess what I found

"

I'm still amazed that people defended the whole "sexual partners is now a SLUR" thing.

On “Why a Trump Loss is Best for Conservatives

brother, "Twitter isn't real life" is increasingly a bitter-clinger attitude.

On “Open Mic for the week of 9/23/2024

Proposition: DEI is now what the EPA was in the 1970s; a statement by the government that we are rich enough to afford to do things clean, instead of Just Having To Accept Dirt.

"

Well, that sounds like an argument that this hasn't got anything to do with "liberal policies" or "the Trump administration" and is just a regression to the mean.

On “History Will Be Made: Harris VS Trump

I think people have learned that their family and friends really will cut them out of their lives if they express Wrong Opinions, so they just don't talk about it anymore.
