On “Dirty, dirty hands.

It doesn't actually matter at this point.
America has perfected the paradigm of proof by lawsuit.
The only country in the world that could have exposed the pederast priests.
I love my country.

Hehe....someone should write a post......its like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hide.

Cascadian, you are drinking teh Kool-aid if you cannot acknowledge that there are two wholly separate cohorts of the conservative intelligentsia, diametrically opposed on torture, Palin, Rush, Beck, Joe the Plumber, SSM, and various other topics. The fracture started with Palin, and she is still is a good litmus test.
The single place where there seems to a shard of congruence between the two groups is third trimester abortions.

"

IPOF, I am banned at Secular Right while Dr. Troost is welcome to post.
I have a bad habit of pointing out those sort of deep crevasses in their "ideology".

"

"And why is ED part of “you guys?” He’s in favor of gay marriage. Double WTF?"

I consider ED to be part of the conservative intelligentsia.
Correct meh if I'm wrong.

"

Razib (as David Hume) is part of the whole "dive to the right" phenomenon-- as the GOP moves farther right Glenn Beck becomes mainstream and Troost and Alex Jones become merely slightly off, rather than fringe whackjobs.
In my days as a co-blogger at GNXP Razib was fierce in running off the Stormfronters that attemped to frequent Gene Expression. He was merciless with the banhammer.
Now Razib is in Glenn Beck's cohort.
Razib is especially hypocritical in trying to justify a secular conservative position for opposing SSM by invoking traditionalism, ignoring the fact that "traditional wisdom" would mandate retaining creationism and IDT, since that is traditional, mainstream and majority american belief. Both Razib and Heather have warned of the "dangers" of SSM.....but there is simply NO SECULAR REASON to oppose SSM. The Secular Right is a lie.
The embrace of sketchy right wing extreme groups is only getting airtime on Charles Johnson's site. I think it is pretty dangerous.
Mostly, the enemy of your enemy is still your enemy.

E.D. you guys are in a world of hurt...the conservative flirtation with the neo-nazis and white supremicists continues apace at the Secular Right blog.
Derbyshire has gone insane.

On “Glenn Beck and the Red Knight

Read what you like, promote what you like.
I'm arguing for self policing, not censorship.
I don't really expect conservatives to exercise their much vaunted moral authority to do the right thing. They never do.
I'm arguing that the risk to their brand is unacceptable.
Sadly, there is no altruism in Nature.

"

This is the Malkin argument about the DHS report...."we conservatives are being singled out and persecuted for our views." I expect.....that someone is caching Stormfront and Info Warrior forums everyday now.
I also predict...Beck will show Alex Jones' conspiracy theory movie The Obama Delusion on his show when it comes out.

"

As usual, I prefer to rephrase the problem statement in my language of choice....mathematics.
My studied point being, from a risk analysis POV Beck is too costly for Fox to continue to promote. We are less than 100 days into Obama's presidency. That leaves 3 and 2/3 years for some Info Warrior or Stormfront nutter to attempt a Tim McVeigh and leave a trail of indelible electronic breadcrumbs right back to Beck. I would say the probability is relatively high, given the projected escalation of Beck's rhatoric. The right dodged a bullet with Poplawski because Stormfront and Info Wars purged all his comments and links from the forums immediately.....think about if Poplawski's Beck posting on SF had gone viral on youtube?
Max Blumenthal is watching now, and so are a lot of other ppl, including the DHS.
Irrevocable damage to the republican brand will result from Beck being linked as inspiration to a proto-assassin or attempted-bomber.
It would not be cost viable to me, but it's your choice, Jaybird.
I think you can't afford Beck.

On “stating the obvious

J'acuse.
Torture should be extralegal, spontaneous, and vanishingly rare.
Those obscene scumbags made an institution of torture in MY country, they legalized it and systemized it, and ginned up a whole burocracy to support it.
Hang 'em high.

On “Glenn Beck and the Red Knight

One more thing, Jaybird, Katherine......Stormfront and Info Wars make dKos look like Neopets. Those people are neo-nazis and white supremicists and anti-semites.
One of these things is not like the others.

"

Katherine....did you not read the post?
Poplawski posted a Beck youtube on FREAKIN' STORMFRONT.
Charles Johnson says Beck and Rush are takin' advertising dollars from Alex Jones to pimp his conspiracy theory faux-umentary on their shows.
Jones is a raving anti-Semite that believes the JOOOS are controlling the world.
It is NOT the same.
I suggest you and Jaybird visit Stormfront and Info Wars (Alex Jones site).
Before you start with the "well....they did it too" BS.

"

well, he didn’t seem crazy to me…

then you haven't watched him
step on, poseur

"

My rightwing friends defend Beck as a comic....he has called himself a rodeo clown.
But I think Beck is really this kind of clown, that terrified me when I was small.

But why are they clowns? They aren't funnie.

"

Thank you E.D.
That was quite beautiful.
Now can we please pin Jaybird's eyes open a la Clockwork Orange and force him to watch an hour of Beck?

On “The Problem with the Tea Parties

Did you see that Palin tv interview....where she was asked .....just who are these "elites"?
Her answer-- "anyone that thinks they are better than you."

"

E.D. .......here is why the Palin rallies made us so uncomfortable.
I suspect.
Read through the comments.
Inferiority complex.

On “torture

I dig Manzi's game theoretic approach. Given that human decisionmaking is an emotioncharged process, and that human empathy is distributed over a likely gaussian with Bono and Mother Teresa at the upper right tail and Cheney and Kim Jong Il at about negative infinity on the lower left, if we can reduce moral dichotomies to mathematics, it is always more productive.
Or maybe that is just how my particular brain is wired.
In any non-time-limited iterated game......strategy beats tactics.

On “The Problem with the Tea Parties

well..there weren't any teaparties in Boulder.
I bet teaparties were pretty rare in university towns.
Mostly college students are Obamotaku.
