On “The Statistical Side of Immigration

I'm totally cool with a massive expansion of legal immigration, specifically in the skill/job areas that we most need to fill. But somehow I think that change would come first and the second, promising to tighten the border to reduce illegal immigration, will never come about.

" the hacking side of the story has been well covered that last few years. WSJ, Forbes, even NPR." I must have missed that.

"

Of course not. It doesn't fit the "narrative" of either side of the sided media wants to go with. Not the short term or the long term.

"

Yeah, funny how that's not mentioned in the press is it? Didn't we just have a convo about NPR and reporter bias?

"How China could paralyse Britain and kill thousands by hacking into your electric car - locking you inside and creating deadly traffic jams. As cheap Chinese EVs flood Britain, EDWARD LUCAS raises a terrifying possibility"

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13292973/China-paralyse-Britain-kill-hacking-electric-car-deadly-traffic-jams-EDWARD-LUCAS.html

"Tens of thousands of Chinese cars will be sold in Britain this year. This doesn’t just create an economic bonanza for Beijing, it gives it a geopolitical advantage too. For modern electric cars are computers on wheels. To function properly, they must be constantly connected to the internet, so that they can receive, gather and share data on their performance and surroundings.

"This is a recipe for mayhem. Hackers demonstrated years ago how easy it was to remotely disable a single vehicle. With the full weight of a state cyber-warfare agency behind it, such attacks would be far more devastating and widespread."

What seems missing here is that those non Chinese cars have the same vulnerability and could be affected those those in OUR gov't. Nah, that's crazy talk.

"

Everyone knew that NPR leaned left. I stopped listening over a decade ago, or more, when it became clear that they stopped paying lip service to impartiality. They never were, but that had plausible deniability back then.

Didn't even notice it....

"Tesla scraps low-cost car plans amid fierce Chinese EV competition"

Entry-level Tesla car won’t be built, three sources tell Reuters
Tesla to focus on self-driving taxis instead, sources said
Strategy shift comes as Tesla faces competition from China EV makers including BYD

"The stark reversal comes as Tesla faces fierce competition globally from Chinese electric-vehicle makers flooding the market with cars priced as low as $10,000"

I wonder if these Chinese cars are even legal in the states.

The real problem with Afghanistan was we went there and didn't see out the societal change, if it was even possible. You need 30 years or more, to essentially let those of the old guard die off. So it was a mistake to go, or to go and not stay long enough to effect the change we wanted.

The pullout WAS always going to be a fiasco. When has it not been? Vietnam, Afghanistan for the Soviets, etc. The data posted only serves to highlight that our administration (regardless of who's leading it) is not capable of being an empire that holds physical land, unlike the brits who used to.

New Details Emerge of Afghanistan Chaos
https://tennesseestar.com/world/new-details-emerge-of-afghanistan-chaos/realclearwire/2024/04/03/

"In a transcribed interview before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, former Foreign Service officer Samuel Aronson said the very opposite in living, harrowing color. “Let me be clear,” he told lawmakers behind closed doors, “I cannot call this evacuation a success.”"

"Aronson recalled hotwiring buses to ferry the massive crush of humanity that descended on the airport and the sometimes impossible task of determining who should and should not be allowed inside the gates. He rejected the characterization later offered by State that the Taliban, whom the U.S. relied on at times to facilitate the departure of American citizens, was “businesslike and professional.”"

"Managing the situation on the ground fell to Wilson, acting ambassador to Afghanistan.......Wilson told lawmakers, however, that he was not directly involved in planning the operation. He also appeared unaware more than two years later that, per Department of Defense policy, he bore ultimate responsibility for the evacuation. “I believe that it was the responsibility of the chief of mission to call for an evacuation,” he testified, adding later that the operation itself would be carried out by “combatant command personnel who were not going to take orders from me.”

Christ, what a shitshow.

Possible Fragment From ISS Battery Pallet May Have Crashed Through Florida Home

"Afterwards, NASA collected the debris from Otero and is currently analyzing it to determine its origin. The time and location is consistent with the space station’s pallet of old batteries, but its origin and nature have yet to be confirmed."

Smooth guys.

Judge denies all 8 of Hunter Biden's motions to dismiss his tax indictment

Actually, I think both. The people involved had the attitude of "that's not my problem", You'd think enlightened self interest would kick in since this paper is being published and YOUR name is on it.

"It’s unclear how this all got through the editing, peer review, and publishing process. Motherboard contacted the paper’s U.S.-based reviewer, Jingbo Dai of Northwestern University, who said that it was not his responsibility to vet the obviously incorrect images. (The second reviewer is based in India.)"

"Most of the stuff that we sit online and argue about is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Even when the issue is an important one, our internet discussions won’t affect the outcome."

Yep, that pretty much defines this site.

"What’s more, even if you can win over a voter, their vote, especially in a presidential election, doesn’t really matter. If you don’t live in a swing state, it really doesn’t matter who you vote for." The reason I basically have no interest in politics anymore, and why I stopped voting.

"The messages showed that in the weeks before publication the scientists had acknowledged that a laboratory leak was a possibility but were concerned about upsetting the Chinese.

Some of the messages also showed the researchers discussing how to respond to queries from Mr McNeil Jr about the origins of the virus.

Mr McNeil Jr emailed both Prof Rambaut and Prof Andersen on 6 February 2020 over a tip off that the government was trying to investigate the possibility the virus was made in a lab in Wuhan.

The scientists shared his emails on messaging platform Slack, with Professor Robert Garry writing Mr McNeil Jr was “very credible but like any reporter can be mislead [sic]”."

"Prof Andersen added. “Let’s not tell him.” They told him the rumours were “demonstrably false” and 10 days later published Proximal Origins."

There ya go. That's lie number two in this whole fiasco, by my count, so far.

On “Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore Struck By Container Ship, Collapses

I have no expertise on engineering design or tolerances of items built like this. I would ASSUME that there is a contingency designed for this, i.e. a ship hitting a support. I'd also assume that there are barriers that would be constructed around the support to mitigate a ship crashing into the pillar. The equivalent of barrels of water on highways around exits. I could be wrong, but if that's not the case, then I'd think this is a case of not if, but when, something would happen. YMMV.

"

Indeed. Especially in that cold water.

"

I'd be very interested in reporting on the bridge supports that the ship hit and the tolerances those were built to. Gotta assume that this very scenario was designed into the supports.

"

Phillip, I was responding to Mayor Brandon Scott's quote where he said this scenario could never be imagined. Frankly, that's crap. The Mayor may not believe this could be imagined, but emergency services SHOULD be imagining this. Tell me I'm wrong.

"

"This is a tragedy that you could never imagine" No. It's the gov't's job to imagine things like this. To have fire and rescue DRILL scenarios like this. You drill and prepare so you can improve the chance to save more lives and not stumble through half remembered procedures you never drill because no one ever thought it would happen. Then you go find out if it was intentional or not.

Happiness is not and end state, it's a means to an end. That' being said, social media is designed to keep "eyes on". The best thing people could do is limit their time with it.

On “Girl Dadding in the Taylor Swift Era

Well, that read was five minutes I'll never get back. :)

I know of Taylor Swift. I know she's a singer. I don't care about her politics, her music, or who's she's dating. Growing up, I never cared about any band's views on anything except for the music they produced. Anything else was irrelevant. I'll never understand why people view entertainers as anything other than entertainers.

On “Open Mic for the week of 3/11/2024

I always knew where stuff like that went since my bedroom as also the laundry room. One day, say around 13, my mom came in and said "here's how you do laundry. From now on, you do yours."
